A farm worker named Enoch Rhodes was fatally stung by a bumble bee while working on his farm southeast of town on Tuesday. The incident prompted local authorities to urge caution around bee activity in rural areas.
Word spread Tuesday morning that Feoch Rhodes died suddenly from a bumble bee sting while working at a farm near town. He was 66, left a wife, one son Charles, and two daughters Minnie and Edith. Funeral services were held Thursday at Rose Hill Church with Rev. D. F. Kain officiating.
Robert Pilkington of Van Buren will occupy the K of P room about September 1 with a new stock of general merchandise. The front will receive plate glass, walls repapered, and a cement walk installed, making the shop the town’s finest business room.
A Sunday School Convention is planned at the U B Church in this place on next Thursday August 3. Rev D F Kain will preach at the U B Church on Wednesday evening before the convention.
Three car loads of crushed stone were received and laid on the streets to compare its value with that of inferior gravel as part of an experiment.
A partial solar eclipse will occur the morning of August 30. Viewers should rise at 5 o clock to observe it and can see the event more clearly with smoked glass.
The town board changes its schedule from Tuesday to Monday meetings. It will now convene on the second and fourth Monday nights of each month.
Thieving boys stole a basket of dinner from C. C. Carter's carriage at the Saints' camp ground last Sunday. The basket included a neatly prepared meal with table linen and silverware valued at five dollars. They were seen and chased into a corn field but escaped with the basket.
W H Davis and family went to Pierceton Monday for the school opening on Sept 11. Prof Davis will begin his second year as principal of the Pierceton schools on that date.
An ice cream social is planned at Grove Chapel Church located northeast of here next Thursday evening August 31. The Claypool Band will perform music throughout the event.
Miss Verna Hoke will depart Sept 7 for Los Angeles via the Chicago and Rock Island route to join her father and study at a local college for about a year or longer. She has been a successful teacher in Anderson schools and was advanced to principal of the seventh Street schools last year.
A Wednesday sale at the J. C. Tucker farm 3 miles east and 1 mile south of town includes 20 Short-Horn Polled Durhams, 4 horses, 20 hogs, 14 cattle, chickens, farming implements and household items. Usual terms, 12 months, sale starts 9 30 a m. Gill & Bowers Auctioneers W H Kern clerk.
A new law prohibits painting printing pasting or other markings on or affixing notices to buildings fences or trees without owner consent. Conviction carries a fine from five to three hundred fifty dollars. Exemptions include posted public sale notices by sheriffs administrators executors or guardians or notices required by law.
Rev Sarah led a Chicago excursion last Friday with 612 passengers who returned satisfied. His extensive experience helped manage a large party in a big city, and he hopes for another trip next year if conditions permit. Passengers praised Nickel Plate Road accommodations and the careful handling of the journey.
Elza Lawshe of Parker City and Mrs Zook with children from Converse are visiting their parents Mr and Mrs Thomas Lawshe west of town. They attended the Heeter Lawshe wedding Sunday.
A large crowd attended the camp meeting at Yellow Creek lake last Sunday with many arriving early and staying all day. Weekday services also attracted big attendance and organizers expect this year to break previous records.

Samuel Sharp of Dayton Indiana spent a few days at Winona and visited relatives and old friends in this locality. He is a former resident of the area and returned home Wednesday evening accompanied by Miss Jane Robinson who will stay with Mr and Mrs Sharp for several days.
Orris White of Osborn Paper Co Marion and his family visited their uncle H. L. Meredith trustee of Franklin township. They arrived from Elkhart last Friday and stayed a few days enjoying the country air. On Tuesday White said they could not stay longer as he likes young chicken. They stayed with the Pearsons and planned to take Marion’s 11 oclock train.
Francis Anderson 72, former Silver Lake resident, died at his Hammond home Saturday August 16 after a six month illness marked by weakness due to old age. Funeral Monday at 3 PM at Sycamore church near Mentone. He leaves a wife and an adopted daughter and was previously known in this community. Mr and Mrs Robertson and Mrs Grosnickle attended. Anderson and his wife lived here for years and were well known to locals. He visited friends here last year.
Joseph Kerlin and his son Delbert were near the Pearson restaurant when their dog Dock, belonging to Pearson, bit Delbert as he tried to stroke the dog. The teeth penetrated clothing about three fourths of an inch, causing a minor skin wound. Delbert was shaken but unhurt, and the injury was treated.
Mrs. Mary Price widow of Witener Price died Thursday morning at 5 15 at her grandson L Price home northwest of town at age 87. She leaves daughters Mrs Benjamin Cole Mrs Henry Reynolds of Plymouth and Mrs Samuel Lovely of Denver two sons E Price of Plymouth and William Price of this place. Funeral at United Brethren Church Saturday. details pending.
