The county will send 112 boys to Camp Sherman in Ohio and Camp Caster in Michigan next week. Overall August draft is expected to exceed 160 men with 15 to 20 more called, including many class one registrants and some from 1918.
Teachers from the community traveled to Warsaw for a week long institute with an excellent program. They show great interest in the sessions and activities conducted by the instructors.
Willis Rockhill a thirteen year old son of Mr and Mrs Alva T Rockhill superintendent and matron at the county infirmary near Warsaw drowned in Goose Lake Sunday afternoon. He and three friends had secured an old boat and he leaped from it about thirty feet from shore sinking in ten to twelve feet of water. A pulmotor and Warsaw physician arrived but efforts to revive him failed.
More than twenty Marion Boy Scouts camp at the lake in twelve tents under army rules. A Marion minister scout master leads the group and plans an exhibition drill on the street during tonight’s hand concert, inviting locals to attend.
A large Thursday crowd attended a band concert and patriotic meeting. Rev Naftzver delivered an experienced and splendid address to the assembly.
Smith Horne of Washington Indiana, once a wood mill builder who toured major U S cities, visited friends here last week. Born on a local farm, he later ran a wood working factory in Washington. At nearly seventy he stays active and youthful, claiming he can still perform a somersault.
A Sunday morning service at U B church will feature a flag unveiling after Sunday School. The flag bears six stars for Clem Teeter Robert Craig Chester Craig Union Oldfather Water Sunday Hollice Bryant serving in the government. One, Clem Teeter, is in the Navy and Union Oldfather is reportedly abroad. The community is urged to attend to honor the boys serving in the world war.
William Bruce of Huntington will travel to Camp Custer next Tuesday with the local Huntington group. He served three and a half years in the army and served with Pershing on the Mexican border.
Mrs James Anglin of St Louis has been here with her mother Mrs Myers and husband. Mr Anglin a traveling salesman for a hardware firm has been transferred from Missouri to this territory and they will likely move to Warsaw soon.
Miss Beulah Martindale returns home from Boonton New Jersey after several weeks visiting her brother C O Martindale and family.
The Public Service Commission of Indiana approved higher rates for People's Mutual Telephone Company serving Mentone Silver Lake Burker and Big Koot with about 965 phones. Hearing at Warsaw city hall saw contest from patrons. toll rates unchanged. plant valued at 50831.14. New rates include 160 per month for business single line 135 for residence 140 two party business 125 two party residence and 125 rural party line with a ten cent early payment discount.
Large attendance at the Miller reunion held last Sunday at the Gamble home south of town. Report delayed for this issue and to be published in the next issue.
Mrs Cassie Brooks and her children left the locality for home in California after six weeks visiting her mother Mrs Hannah Arimey and relatives. She had a day’s visit in Huntington before continuing.
Saturday will host the registration of all young men who have reached 21 since June 5. The turnout is small in this locality, but every eligible man is expected to report on that day.
A large gathering of the Lowman family held a reunion at the lake on Wednesday. No minutes or report were provided, but organizers hope to publish an update in the next issue.
A H Bowen purchased the Walter Hummen barber shop Monday and took possession immediately. Pierre Underhill will continue to work there.
Large crowd attended the Saints camp meeting at Yellow Creek Gallop ground last Sunday. Officials expect even more attendees next Sunday as the event grows in size and prominence.

Mrs J W Walburn traveled to Akron and then to Indianapolis with Mrs Moore to visit sister Mrs Willis Maples who was very ill. At latest report she improved and Walburn returned home Wednesday evening.
A large turnout traveled to Warsaw last Saturday to view a naval display from the Great Lakes training station. The exhibit featured a 23-piece Jackie band, a life size torpedo, a miniature submarine, a miniature destroyer, and an Eagle boat aboard a train that traveled through Wisconsin to Peru and other Indiana points, then back through Michigan and Illinois. The Culver Black Horse troop also appeared and drew substantial attention.
Mrs. O. P. Stoner died at her Claypool home last Thursday. Aged 70, she suffered from dropsy. Survived by her husband and several children.
Orval Carr writes from Camp Devens via Chicago Milwaukee Detroit and Niagara Falls describing a long rail journey with stops for rest and Red Cross hospitality. He notes Canadian soil and corn conditions, Niagara Falls illumination, and a 280 foot suspension bridge, ending mid description of the trip.
A card from this office notes Henry Ayers has been transferred to Camp Taylor several weeks ago. He is aged and listed with a hat and snally ties as identifiers.
The notice reports a disturbance by several youths during Rev Naftzner's address last Thursday. It warns that disturbing a public meeting may incur a heavy fine and that the law must be obeyed, hoping a word to the wise suffices.
Kosciusko County voters must register by October 7 to be eligible for the next November election. The registration board has begun its work and urges residents to complete the process promptly.
A local notice invites all boys and girls under age to enter a contest for a Shetland pony to be awarded by votes. Entries must register at stated business firms and solicit votes from August 24 to August 30, 1918, with the winner chosen by votes received.
