Reports from across the country describe men wearing overalls to push clothing prices down while women in public workplaces wear calico and gingham. Housewives curb potato purchases demanding prices at 75 cents per peck or lower, and Peoria Illinois launches a buy nothing club banning luxuries.
Rev. FE Smith moved to Claypool to take up his work at the M E Church. The charge, split at the late conference, transfers Smith to the Claypool end while Rev. W M Smith who had been at Warren for a year is reassigned.
Mrs Luda Homman and Mrs Mary Fitton announce a Friday sale at the Fitton residence North Jefferson street. Auction begins at one o clock sharp with Jesse Lynch as auctioneer featuring coal stoves oil stove two oil heaters household furniture sewing machine clocks vacuum sweepers rugs hall carpet matting and many other articles.
A taxi driver in Akron paid an 11.80 dollar fine for making a wrong turn. The Silver Lake town noted frequent violations of auto law with cars and a truck appearing without current numbers. One vehicle bore a license tag reading license applied for and locals say it can take months to obtain a plate.
Misa Maxine Snyder has accepted a clerical position at the Fresno store and began work Monday morning at the local location.
A blaze originating in a vent pipe at Hawks Furniture Company warehouse in Goshen Friday night caused an estimated loss between 940,000 and 945,000. The fire heavily damaged finished furniture, with about 980 pieces stored in the affected area.
A resident complains of neighborhood youths killing robins. She blames younger boys and urges parents to warn children with air guns or bean shooters to stop harming robins and other birds, sparrows included.
The Indiana Music Teachers Association plans legislation to require prospective music teachers to pass an examination proving competency before teaching in Indiana. The proposal will be debated at the annual convention in Richmond from April 20 to 23.

The M. E. church at Pierceton has contracted for a motion picture machine to be installed once delivery arrives. Church officers believe moving pictures can teach many biblical lessons and vividly portray scenes from the Holy Land.
Bernard Votter has accepted a position as clerk at the A. F. Sala drug store in North Manchester and began work Monday morning. The family likely will move to North Manchester soon.

The Rainbow Division Veterans plan their Indiana state convention in Indianapolis on May 29. Indiana hosts six chapters with about 1,200 members and many will attend the national convention in Birmingham July 12 to 14.

G E Lamar released from government service arrives Friday evening with his wife and resides at the H A Martindale home in the south part of town. He served for years as an electrician aboard a U S ship and has traveled the world.

Prospects indicate a tractor factory may locate at South Whitley. Peoria business men represent the venture, needing five acres for a brick one story building about 50 by 200 feet. Initial employment expected at 75 to 160 workers.
Mrs. W. F. Ebert traveled to Chicago Wednesday to visit her sister Mrs. Catharine Boulton who was taken seriously ill about a week ago while staying with her daughter Mrs. Estella Jones's family.

Last Sunday evening at United Brethren church the Silver Lake high school senior class held baccalaureate exercises with Rev. T. D Butterbaugh delivering a well received sermon from Acts 13 36. The church displayed the class colors gold and blue and many attendees stood or were turned away due to full seating.
The telephone men's convention in Winona is definite for June 14 15 and 16. Plans are underway to receive a large number of telephone company representatives.
More than forty members attended the local K of P meeting on Monday evening. The third degree was well presented by the local team. A luncheon followed by a smoker ended with an auction of three bread loaves, raising just over nine dollars, the buyer returning one loaf to be resold for club room expenses.
Auditing official Ben Banister leases about 900 acres in Liberty township for an oil test well. Indications favor abundant oil in the area and a successful test could spur multiple wells and full field development by several oil companies watching the Banister lease.
The Mahlon Rhodes family from northeast of town attended the funeral of Adam Mattern in Etna Green last Sunday. Mattern was found dead in bed last Thursday and is survived by his wife and three brothers.
Mr and Mrs Ralph Kreamer who went to St Louis last fall have returned here for a visit with their people They are undecided whether to remain or return to St Louis where Mr Kreamer had been employed
Former Congressman H A Barnhart of Rochester has contracted with the Redpath Chautaqua Co to lecture this summer. He will spare every night for three months. His topics include Sidelights on Congress and Other Men's Flowers. Barnhart is noted as a state reputationary orator with prior addresses in the region.
C W Scott of Warsaw declines the appointment as commandant of the National Soldiers Home at Lafay ette citing business conflicts. He and his wife wish to remain in the county seat town.
Mrs. C. A. Pearson came back home Monday evening after a week in Pittsburg Pennsylvania visiting her brother Earl Smith.
Silver Lake officials inform residents that all chickens must be penned up within corporate limits. The move follows numerous complaints about chickens entering neighbors yards and causing mischief. Firearm use within town limits remains prohibited except where chickens or rabbits cause disturbance, per council approval.
Deverlle Underhill, employed on the Michigan Central Railroad as a fireman, with headquarters at Niles, visited his parents Mr. and Mrs. L. D. Underhill last week. He has performed well as a stoker engine worker and earns a liberal recompense for his time.
T G Johnson of North Manchester visited this place last week, previously running a harness repair shop in our sister city. He is now traveling the country taking orders for groceries and extracts as his health allows.
Mrs Elizabeth Hively, who spent the winter in Chicago with her daughter Mrs J S Marsh, visited her son Arthur Hively and wife near Claypool last Saturday and early this week traveled to remain there this summer.
A petition was filed with the Indiana Public Service Commission in Indianapolis by Peoples Mutual Telephone Company of Silver Lake seeking authority to raise rates. A hearing on the matter is set for Monday April 26.
On last Saturday evening the Mothers' Club members were entertained at the Hugo Gemmer home on East Main Street by Mrs Gemmer and Mrs Carl Howenstein in honor of their birthday anniversary. Games and contests were the feature of the evening and a two course luncheon
The Silver Lake high school senior class will graduate nine students at the United Brethren church with Dr. L E K Brown of Rushville delivering the address Seeing the Elephant. Tickets sold quickly and seats are expected to fill. music by the Goshen College Quartet will accompany the ceremony.
The Claypool High School commencement exercises were held Tuesday evening in the Methodist Church with a large crowd attending. Dr Wirt Lowther delivered the address and many present called it one of the best talks they ever heard.
Information from this office states Mrs. Kate Wiltrout widow of Chas E Wiltrout was married about ten days ago to William Russel at Bourbon co He is described as a reputable man and the couple will reside in Bourbon Mrs Russel is a sister to Jacob and Ss McKridt of this place.
