Grant County Women Observe United Nations Day Program

Grant County Church Women of Grant County WHE plan United Nations Day events on the Western New Mexico University campus. Esther Hymer, longtime U.N. observer for UCW, will be a guest speaker with a program of patriotic songs led by Mrs. George Smith. The meeting opens with a silent meditation and features numerous local figures from WNMU, religious and civic groups. Reservations for the luncheon are closed.

Frank Etheredges Are Visitors Here

Frank Etheredge and Mrs. Etheredge have spent a month visiting relatives in Silver City and Hurley. They reside in Lawton Oklahoma while he served at Fort Sill. He was on an 80 day furlough before being sent to Bamberg Germany on November 5. Mrs Etheredge plans to join him overseas before year end. The Paris Eiffel Tower opened in 1889 and Saturnalia feasts were noted in ancient customs.

Trainmaster For Santa Fe Retires After 41 Years

A. G. Crawford, long time trainmaster for the Santa Fe, retires after 41 years of service. He will be succeeded by W. M. Orr, now assistant supervisor of air brakes, who takes the new title of foreman of engines. Orr and Crawford are longtime railroad men with careers spanning Barstow and El Paso. Crawford resides in El Paso with his family.

States police race to Catron County scene

As of noon no trace found of the car or the man in blood-stained clothing. Tow said Capt. C A White of the state police at Mesilla Park is driving to Catron County to accompany the young woman to the scene to verify what happened. A general alert remains out for the man and the red car.

Weekend traffic toll rises with multiple fatal crashes

A collision in Socorro left a 74 year old pedestrian dead after stepping into traffic. In Shiprock a 13 year old girl Shirley Mae Cory died in a car overturn near the junction of U S 560 and 666. A Santa Fe family of three died when a car rear ended another on State Road 422 south of Santa Fe. Five others were injured in related crashes. A one year old, Chris Butcher, died when his car pulled onto U S 80 85 into a truck trailer near Las Cruces.

Knife, Fork Club Picks Officers For Unexpired Terms

The Grant County Knife and Fork Club held a brief session on October 25 to elect directors for expiring terms. Francis B. Parsons led nominations with Vincent M. Vesely and Dr. Arthur L. Bach as members. several officers and continuing directors were chosen to serve into 1967 and 1985, with an Oct 31 meeting at the Western University faculty lounge to elect officers for the coming year and plan the annual membership drive.
