Ninety six Herefords owned by Portales Baptist Children's Home died in a Hobbs feedlot from suspected nitrate poisoning in baled Sudan grass. Veterinarians treated dozens more, planning lab tests to identify poison type. The herd, part of about 300 cattle on Henry Record’s ranch, was unpaid insured.
Non ferrous metal prices today show copper at oil cents per pound in Connecticut Valley. Lead 12 cents a pound in New York. Zinc 12 percent cents per pound in East St. Louis. Tin 1.22 percent per pound in New York. Foreign silver 1.293 per troy ounce in New York.
Reports of dog packs maiming and killing cattle in Grant County prompted Sheriff Lawrence Shelley to urge owners to restrain dogs. A recent incident near Santa Rita involved four dogs attacking a cow, with the owner taking action to hinder the pack. The sheriff cited New Mexico statutes holding owners liable for livestock damages and requiring dogs to be killed if they injure livestock, urging owner cooperation to prevent further harm.
Hilton A Dickson Jr travels to Phoenix with Steve Reynolds and state engineers David Hale and Phil Mates to meet with Arizona officials and discuss the Central Arizona Project. The group, appointed by Gov. Campbell, will discuss the Hooker Dam portion of the scheme.

Santa Fe AP New Mexico plans to mail 1964 license plate applications to about 600000 last year’s registrants by November 15. Applications show amounts due, a 50 cent admin fee and postage. Metal plates will be issued for trucks and trailers while new registrations go to the Motor Vehicle Department offices.

The governor backs prioritizing 270 per child if needed, over facilities and vocational funding, with ongoing support for higher education institutions.
In Santa Fe AP wire, a proposed ban targets pictures and magazines showing Santa Claus endorsing a brand of Christmas cheer. The plan argues such images mislead about liquor advertising and violates standards for minor alcohol promotions.
Helen Hunt Jackson 61 longtime Santa Rita School teacher died yesterday afternoon in El Paso Texas after six weeks of treatment at Hotel Dieu. A Grant and Luna County native she was a charter member and past president of the Silver City Delta Kappa Gamma chapter. Survivors include two sisters seven nieces and seven nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3 pm Saturday at Curtis Mortuary Chapel Silver City with burial in Silver City Cemetery. Pallbearers are H J Nunn Dan G Thorne Walter Oglesby J D McLehaney Sammy Grijalva and Rex Matthews.
Lucy Howell, 47, was recovering from a accidental gunshot wound suffered Wednesday while cleaning a drawer at her home. Authorities said a loaded gun discharged, striking her in the left chest.
