Navajo College President Dies in Arizona Shooting Accident

Dr. Med Hatathii, 48, president of Navajo Community College, was accidentally shot at his Many Farms home while cleaning a hunting rifle. He helped develop the four year college to over 500 students and 35 faculty, with plans for a new campus near Lukachubal Mountains. Hatathii spoke Navajo and English and had recently returned to the reservation after college study.

McGovern Gains Nine In Yankelovich Poll

George McGovern rose nine points to 27 percent in a Yankelovich poll for Time and The New York Times, but trails Nixon by 30 in the final weeks of the campaign. Nixon led 57 to 27 with 16 undecided. Gallup had 58 to 26 favoring Nixon on Vietnam handling.

McGovern charges Nixon hired saboteurs in politics

Los Angeles AP reports Senator George McGovern accused the Nixon administration of hiring 50 people to sabotage the political process while only 13 of 2.7 million federal workers address peacetime job conversion. He cited a Washington Post story about a White House aide and urged focus on defense layoffs and aerospace workers. McGovern planned a Texas swing aiming to capture the region’s Old Confederacy states.

Mare Michele Pride Wins at Yonkers to Set Track Mark

The 4-year-old cheatnut mare Micheles Pride, owned by Mike Reppucci of Stamford Connecticut, won her third Yonkers start on August 14 pacing a mile in 2 02.2 the fastest time for her. She had earlier won four straight mile paces at Roosevelt Raceway in New York before summer. Her 1977 earnings rose to 14320 after nine races with last year totaling 15003 from 26 starts.

Obituary for Kenneth W. Brown of Silver City

Kenneth W. Brown 52, native of Las Vegas New Mexico, died Sunday night after illness. Retired cattle rancher and livestock grower, partner in Quality Sand and Gravel of Silver City. Survived by wife Norma Brown two daughters Lela Snoeberger and Jean Abney son David five grandchildren brother Charles Brown Albuquerque. Rotary club past president Clayton and Silver City members. Funeral 2:30 p.m. Wednesday Curtis-Bright Funeral Chapel with interment Memory Lane Cemetery Rev Alfred Pace officiating.

Bernard Harrison Named To District ICOF Office

Juniper Lodge No. 13 of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows met with Past Grand Ronald Degitt presiding. Bernard Harrison, lodge secretary and New Mexico Grand Lodge delegate, reported on the Albuquerque session where he was named district deputy grand master for Hatch District. Past Grand Henry Watson received a past grand master’s collar and jewel from Past Grand Fred Ramsey. Initiation of new members is planned for 7:40 p.m. October 26 at the lodge.
