Bill Johnson reports from the Southwest where drought lingers as winds stir dust across the midsection. Despite good pasture and water in rare ponds, farmers anticipate crop planting while communities pray for rain and climatologist Bill Curry cites above normal fall rainfall in 1971 as a mitigating factor.
Secretary of State William P. Rogers urged free trade as the best path for global interests, warning protectionism risks harming U.S. exports and national welfare. The remarks, at the Chamber of Commerce, targeted domestic and foreign protectionists and criticized isolationist responses to trade inequities. The report also covers drought conditions across the central U.S. with forecasts of severe risk through 1976.
Santa Fe New Mexico. Gov Bruce King may testify on a congressional bill to fence or convert irrigation canals into closed conduits. Sponsored by Senator Clinton P. Anderson the measure seeks federal funding with the Interior Department providing half the cost. Anderson pressed for quick action and said he hopes to schedule testimony.
Services for William D. McCargish were held at 4 p.m. today at Curtis Bright Funeral Chapel. Interment followed at Memory Lane Cemetery with the Rev. James De Busk officiating. He is survived by his parents two brothers and his grandparents.
Len Burris, year-old son of Mrs. Margaret Burris and the late Walter M Burris, died Friday at M. L. Anderson Hospital in Tucson after a leukemia illness. Born in Silver City, he lived here until the family moved to Tucson and later attended Cobre High. Survivors include his mother, two brothers Walter Burris Jr. and Tim, and two sisters Mrs. Date Wilson of Silver City and Cindy of Tucson. Funeral services set for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Adair Funeral Chapel on Dodge Street in Tucson.
A powerful blast at a Courtaulds owned synthetic fibres plant in Carrickfergus near Belfast killed one man and injured ten others. The IRA was blamed for the attack amid fears of Protestant mob violence and a possible backlash as security forces reported a tip about explosives in a canteen prior to the detonation. The plant cost 31.2 million dollars and was among Europe’s most advanced.
Officials from the New Mexico Department of Development and ten cities attend the American Apparel Manufacturers Association Trade Show in Atlantic City New Jersey. Vincent Yegge says the delegation aims to attract needle trades manufacturing to New Mexico as the four day event opens Tuesday. The DOD has reserved booth space.
