Britain Malta sign seven year defense pact
Britain and Malta signed a 250 million pact allowing continued use of air and naval bases on Malta for seven years. Malta will receive 36.4 million per year in rent funded partly by NATO allies. The deal includes 16.2 million in NATO aid and 6 million from Italy to cover Malta's deficit. the United States supported the agreement to check Soviet influence in the Mediterranean.
