Dr. Leon Bower retired chair and professor at Western New Mexico University announces his candidacy for a Silver City council post in the April 5 municipal election. He led the 1965 Silver Consolidated School District bond drive and supported the successful municipal sales tax campaign. He ran as an independent and pledged service to the community.

Capt. Rey MacDonald of the 1st Fighter Wing bailed out of an F106 over central Alaska after a collision. He endured 51 hours in bitter cold, using a survival pack and flares to attract rescuers, until a C123 crew spotted his parachute and radioed a helicopter to airlift him to Elmendorf.

Four Deaths in New Mexico Weekend Traffic Toll
Four more persons died in New Mexico over the weekend as the 1986 fatality toll stayed ahead of last year's pace. Thurman E. London a 75 year old pedestrian was struck by a tractor trailer 17.4 miles east of Lordsburg on U S 70 80. Joe W Slape an El Paso Texas truck driver said the pedestrian stood near the highway center and could not be avoided. Walter Palmer 33 of Santa Fe died from injuries when the car he rode in rear ended a heavy truck on U S 85 near Santa Fe. Dan Matthews 19 Mountainair died from injuries after a pickup overturned near Mountainair. Luther Brannan 44 of Silver City died after his car ran off New Mexico 90 near Silver City.

Gemini 8 Flight Delayed By Spacecraft And Atlas Leaks

Brannan Killed in One Car Crash Near Silver City
Luther Howard Brannan 44 dies Saturday in a one vehicle crash on Highway 90 eight miles southwest of Silver City. He was thrown from the car and pinned beneath it on Tyrone hill. He had lived in Silver City about two years. Funeral set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Heather Mortuary Lordsburg chapel. Burial at Mountain View Cemetery Lordsburg. He is survived by his wife Betty and eight children, plus four grandchildren, a brother Ted and four sisters.
