Final stand at Ashau camp falls to Viet Cong forces

In Da Nang area, after nearly two days of heavy combat, Ashau Special Forces camp was abandoned to North Vietnamese troops. Lt. Col. Lacey said defenders evacuated by helicopter as weather hampered air support. Montagnards and U S advisers fought fiercely until sunset.

Snow surveys in Mogollon Mountains track deep 1966 winter

James R. Wray of Mogollon has spent six winters measuring snow in the Mogollon Mountains for the Soil Conservation Service. He uses a heated snow car to reach upper snow courses, recording depth weight and temperature at several sites from January 15 to April 1. The 1966 season shows record depths, suggesting potential for a ski resort.

Dr. David M. Dennis of Western New Mexico University delivered an informative slide-discussion on the geology of the Silver City area at the Silver City Grant County Chamber luncheon. Hugh Hawkins led a tribute to Barney and Rosa Borenstein for their longtime chamber support and introduced new and prospective members from local firms. Clifton L. Reed announced next week's program honoring International DeMolay Week.

Special Hospitals Board Convenes at Ft Bayard Facility

The Special Hospitals Board formed by the last legislature met at Fort Bayard State Hospital. Attendees included Dr. Eugene Mann of Portales as chairman and Mrs. Lena Pfeiffer of Tatum as secretary. The board assumes control of all tuberculosis and geriatrics hospitals in New Mexico and will move Fort Stanton patients to Fort Bayard while Fort Stanton Hospital is turned over to Las Lunas school. George W. Bryan named executive director.

Hurley Schoolroom Shortage Spurs Parent Protest

More than two dozen Hurley Elementary parents petitioned the Cobre District School Board over missing two rooms and the combining of fourth and fifth grades under one teacher.
