Legislator Opposes State Funds for Abortion
New Mexico State Rep. Silas T. Garcia of Santa Fe Sandoval announced to Gov. Apodaca that he will raise the issue of using public funds for abortions in the 1978 Legislature. He said state funds should favor medical care and food for the poor, citing the Supreme Court decision permitting states to refuse federal funds for abortion. Garcia sponsored two abortion bills that became law on June 17, including amendments to the vital statistics act.

Forest closures ease in parts of New Mexico areas

Money Given to Navajo Tribe For Jobs and Training
Albuquerque AP reports the Department of Jabor added 29.8 million dollars to Navajo training and employment aid. Salazar Found Guilty in Insurance Premium Case
David Salazar, former chief of the employee insurance unit at the New Mexico Highway Department, was found guilty of pocketing an insurance premium. Santa Fe Magistrate Judge Eugene Romero placed him on six months probation in a plea deal with the state, after Salazar was fired for allegedly misappropriating $40.34 monthly payments from David M. Garcia for eight months. The plea agreement discharges charges on other premiums.

15 year old jail inmate escapes through courthouse library hole
