Wright Gray sentenced to maximum terms in embezzlement case

District Court Judge Edwin Felter imposed the maximum prison terms on former state environmental officials John R. Wright and Lewis C. Gray in a $395,000 embezzlement scheme. Wright received 2 to 10 years for fraud and 1 to 5 years for conspiracy, served consecutively, while Gray drew 15 years for conspiracy.

Laetrile Tests Planned by National Cancer Institute

The National Cancer Institute will test Laetrile, despite its continued opposition to its effectiveness in cancer treatment. Dr. Guy R. Newell said the study includes two groups of terminal patients and will compare Laetrile with standard therapy plus and without a placebo. Results are expected in about a year.

Fair tonight and Saturday with a gradual warming trend and light variable winds under 15 mph. High of about 88 and a low near 58. Thursday’s high was 84 and the low 51.

Grant County economy strengthens on higher consumer spending

A Standard Rate and Data Service market survey shows Grant County households spent more last year as incomes rose. Food purchases topped expenditures with 17.9 million dollars in grocery and eating venues, and local retail sales rose on higher prices. Car and home goods sales reached 13.4 million dollars, while apparel and furnishings added 899 thousand and 2.44 million respectively as national trends point to ongoing upswing.

Parochial Aid Ruling Allows Some State Support

The Supreme Court split eight to one on taxpayer aid to parochial pupils approving some forms such as diagnostic services and textbook loans while prohibiting equipment loans and field trips. Ohio may fund books and certain services but not field trips or lending equipment, with opinions diverging on scope. Miss Rodeo To Ride In Annual July Fourth Parade

Becky Bilberry 18 from Ft Sumner, the new Miss Rodeo New Mexico, will ride in Silver City's Frontier Days parade on July Fourth. She will also race in the July 3 barrel event and soon head to Oklahoma City for the National Finals ARP competition.
