The Senate Ethics Committee began closed hearings into misconduct charges against Sen Thomas J Dodd D Conn. Copies of more than 4000 documents removed from his office were barred as evidence. Chairman Sen John Stennis said press allegations relied on the removed papers.
Premier Ky's forces sealed off Hue's hospital room where rebel Buddhist leader Thich Tri Quang remains on a hunger strike as part of a broader crackdown. The government pushed toward a September 11 election and Thieu issued a decree on a constitutional assembly and a second vote. American forces fought near Hoa, while U S Coast Guard intercepted a Viet Cong gun running trawler.
The Supreme Court held that civil rights prosecutions may be moved from state to federal courts only in narrow cases. Justice Potter Stewart noted that broad removals would disrupt state federal relations in criminal law. The Mississippi case involved 29 defendants arrested in 1984 in Le Flore County. Stewart said no federal law grants absolute rights to obstruct public street actions or to immunity from state prosecution. Justice Douglas dissented, joined by several justices, referencing Madison and Marshall on federal pretrial remedies. A companion ruling held rights to equal accommodations under the 1964 Civil Rights Act prevent prosecutions in either court.
Mississippi civil rights marchers plan a march and rally in Philadelphia to protest the slayings of James Cheney Michael Schwerner and Andrew Goodman and the burning of churches. Martin Luther King Jr and Floyd McKissick may attend as the Jackson to state capitol route continues. Local supporters gather, pledging bigger turnout and solidarity.
Robert Kennedy told reporters at Kennedy Airport he would support President Johnson for re election in 1968 and would not run for any office other than the Senate in 1970. He spoke after a two week overseas trip visiting Africa, Greece, and Italy with his wife Ethel. He discussed Viet Nam policy, Africa trade, and racial issues in South Africa noting hope for gradual change and criticism of administration policy.
James Fleming 19 and his mother Janelle Fleming were reported in fair condition at Hillcrest General Hospital after a car ran off the road near the Lake Roberts campground entrance and overturned around 1 pm Sunday. Fleming drove the vehicle. state officer Gene Tow investigated. H and R Ambulance from Silver City aided.
The Supreme Court barred applying its new confessional rule retroactively. The ruling restricts trial strategies that rely on obtaining confessions through deceptive methods.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development approved an $8,000 preliminary loan for Bayard to build 40 low rent housing units of which 14 are for elderly residents. Maxwell also received a $2,400 loan for 12 homes including six for the elderly. The loans were announced in a telegram to the Daily Press signed by Senators Clinton Anderson and Joseph Montoya and Representatives Thomas G Morris and E Johnny Walker.
Firemen established a 123 mile line around a week old blaze in Los Padres National Forest. Containment was announced but full control date is unknown as 1,800 firefighters labored in rough terrain under near 100 degree heat. The fire began June 11 after a light plane crash killed two Air Force crew and injured others.
American soldiers and South Vietnamese paratroopers fought for about an hour near Saigon's waterfront using fists bar stools and read pipes. Military police surrounded the area by jeeps with mounted guns and ambulances carried away wounded. The clash followed an incident where a Vietnamese paratrooper was knocked unconscious by GIs. Witnesses described a group of 30 to 40 airborne troops arriving and pulling GIs from bars as the Americans retorted with insults.
Roberta Rubenstein of Lag Cruzes New Mexico finished fourth in the National College Queen contest held in New York. Vicki Lieberstein from UCLA was crowned queen after a week of judging in intelligence poise cooking and driving ability.
Justice of the Peace John Birdwell of Hurley will preside in the Grant County Court house for Justice of the Peace U S Conner during Conner’s vacation this week in a temporary substitution.
David W. Boise and Mrs. Clara Boise mourn the death of Howard Boise 79 at Groverdale California after a long illness. A former Hurley resident he served as postmaster there and ran a barber shop and the Sweet Shop. Survivors include widow Clara Boise and son Elmer Boise of Groverdale. Funeral set for 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in Santa Rosa California.
Four fires started Monday in the Gila National Forest were controlled by 11:30 a.m. according to a Forest Service spokesman. Ten fires from Sunday were also under control. The Monday blazes hit the Black Range Mimbres and Silver City Districts, all lightning caused, with the largest about four acres and most under an acre.
