Shoeshine Man Woody Woodson Shines for Presidents
Seattle 67 year old Earl Woodson Jr known as Woody runs the Olympic Hotel shoe shine stand. He met President Carter at a National Governor's Conference and recalled Truman visiting. Woodson, a longtime church member, says he loves people and aims to treat everyone kindly. He once played in Negro leagues before a 1950 retirement and shoe shining since 1951. Also noted is a rare 18th century Thai stoneware jar from Wat Sri komkan, part of an Asia House Gallery exhibition touring major museums in 1977.

Santa Fe AP reports the state has filed nearly four hundred lawsuits to cut its five percent student loan default rate. Finance director Vincent Montoya says guidelines penalize institutions with high defaults and an assistant attorney general will file suits. Airman Graduates From U-5 Course At Sheppard AFB
The Service Unofficial at Sheppard AFB Texas reports Airman James Alexander graduates from the U-5 Air Force aircraft maintenance specialist course. Alexander son of Mr and Mrs Shelby Alexander of Hurley New Mexico will serve at Hollowan AFB New Mexico. He is a 1976 graduate of Cobre High School Bayard New Mexico. Airman First Class Jase R Polanco son of Mrs Consuelo Polanco of Gila New Mexico deployed with his Tactical Air Command unit for temporary duty at McChord AFB Washington. He serves as an aircraft pneudraulic repairman with the 355 Tactical Fighter Squadron which flies the F-4 Phantom. The unit supports airborne targets for E-3A AWACS radar tests. AirmanPolanco entered the Air Force in April 1973.

Silver City Navy Seaman Honored for Overseas Service
Leroy N. Keene of Silver City New Mexico earned his first promotion to airman in the U 8 Air Keane and has been assigned to Malmstrom AFB Montana as a medical service specialist in the Strategic Air Command after completing training at Sheppard AFB Texas. Antonio Lopez of Silver City also returned from a Western Pacific deployment aboard USS Gridley and joined The Navy in June 1976. He sailed to Pusan Korea Kaohsiung Taiwan Mong Kong and Subic Bay during Operation Tiger aboard the guided missile cruiser. The Gridley homeported in San Diego participated in training maneuvers to test ship capabilities and readiness.

Arson Cases Increase in Albuquerque Fire Reports
Albuquerque seen a rise in arson with 1,352 of 4,632 fires investigated between July 1975 and June 1976 labeled arson. Lt. Phil Silva notes arson rises in economic downturns, following national trends. Fiscal 1975 recorded 907 arson cases, and this year adds 445 more cases than last year.
