Christmas Weekend Reflects Peaceful Yet Troubled Holiday

Across the nation Christmas 1976 saw Pope Paul VI broadcast mass to a billion viewers while a holiday cease-fire ran in Northern Ireland. In the U S President Ford skied in Vail and Amy Carter enjoyed gifts as holiday traffic fatalities neared four hundred. Tragedies included fires in Chicago and Fairfield Maine as families marked Christmas Eve.

Otero County Treasurer Indicted on Embezzlement Count

Otero County grand jury indicted Betty Mata on 16 counts of embezzling about twenty thousand dollars. Trial action follows eight hours of testimony from 16 witnesses. Mata faces up to five years in prison and fines. A civil administrative hearing on her suspension is set for Monday in Alamogordo, with judge denying temporary restraints.

Former Roswell man seeks payment for feeding wild burros

Jim Scatt a former Roswell livestock dealer now living in Texas says the federal government owes him 8060 for feeding 13 wild burros after a 1974 roundup near Tularosa. He contends he bought 16 burros in 1974 but received only partial reimbursement and has billed but been ignored while a federal state clash over jurisdiction played out to the Supreme Court.

Third Grand Jury Indictment Not Yet Returned

A Grant County grand jury has not yet returned its third indictment six days after issuing a 22 page report. The case names four individuals including county commissioners George Brown and David D Diaz and road superintendent Frank Salaiz, all facing multiple counts for neglect of duty and violations of county bridge and road law. They are to appear before Judge Norman Hodges.

Vencill Funeral services scheduled for Mr. Vencill

Funeral mass will be Tuesday at 30 a.m. at St Vincent de Paul Church with burial in Memory Lang Cemetery. The 66 year old Grant County Bank president died Thursday at Hillcrest Hospital after a brief illness. He served in World War I and had a long banking career in Silver City Douglas and Gallup. Survivors include his wife three daughters and three sons. Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers named.
