Larry Hess of Roswell, Republican candidate for state corporation commissioner, campaigned in the Silver City area. He argued high freight rates hurt New Mexico and consumers, claimed his opponent voted to raise trucking rates by 54 percent, and said the commission should serve the public interest, not special interests.
