Silsbee Adopts 1970 Budget and Traffic Plan Move

The Silsbee City Council unanimously adopted a 1970-71 budget totaling 610,368, up from 576,454, citing increases for sanitation water and sewer fire and police departments and a 7 percent city employee raise. City Manager Hickerson proposed a one-way traffic plan for Road-Turrentine Elementary during school hours, approved on a temporary basis, with sign material to determine feasibility. Ordinance 70-10 raises water rates outside city limits by 150 percent to about 9 dollars for a 6-dollar bill, and ordinances 70-8 and 70-9 authorize tax levy and appropriations for the new budget.

Kountze Woman Charged After Hospital Parking Lot Crash

Gail Lynn Parker, 20, of Route 2 Kountze, charged with possession of dangerous drugs by Silsbee Police after a Sept 20 crash at Silsbee Doctors Hospital parking lot. Police say she fled the scene, hit two culverts, and a bottle of drugs was found. Bond set at $5,000. Parker arraigned before Justice Rex Moore.

Redistricting adjourns as county commission meets

Hardin County Commissioners Court and the citizens committee on redistricting adjourned a Sept. 17 meeting after about thirty minutes with only two committee members present Frank McClanahan and Lenox Hawthorne of Silsbee. A new meeting was set for Sept. 24 at 2 p.m. Judge Lack will mail notices to the seven member committee.

Police Probe Coin Machine Thefts in Silsbee

Silsbee officers investigated two coin machine burglaries over the weekend at John D. Westbrook Texgas at 885 N Fifth and H B Simmons Bell Service at 1140 N Fifth. Both machines were pried open in a similar fashion, but authorities could not determine the total stolen.

Fire Destroys House Early Wednesday in Silsbee

A Wednesday 12:45 a m blaze of undetermined origin destroyed the rent house of Pauline Cravy on Loading Dock Road West just north of Silsbee city limits. The unoccupied frame structure was vacant since tenants moved out Tuesday afternoon. Three fire trucks responded but the fire consumed most of the building before firefighters arrived.

Landgraf Named Alternate President's Scholar at Texas A&M

Silsbee High School senior Lester C. Landgraf has been designated an alternate President's Scholar and awarded a four year Opportunity Awards Scholarship to Texas A&M University. The honor honors his leadership and academic record with a minimum $300 annual stipend and eligibility adjustments if other scholars forego. Landgraf, top 50 of 670 scholars, held student body president roles and participated in track, National Honor Society, and Youth Conference activities. He served as U.S. Senate page last summer and earned Eagle Scout rank with a 96.133 GPA average.

Six Theft Suspects Arrested in Kountze

Kountze city patrolmen Walter Overstreet and Claude Lindsey with Deputy Tra Moore report six suspects tied to six thefts and burglaries. Marvin Curtis and Jimmy Wheeler, both 20, were arraigned on burglary warrants for the Sept. 15 Kountze High School burglary. bonds set at 1,000 with Wheeler free and Curtis jailed. A pocket knife and ice cream were taken from the school, with the knife later recovered from suspects. Jesse Waller, 20 of Center, charged with theft of three rifles from a truck at Blair Insurance in Kountze, and another firearm found in his Silsbee apartment. Waller jailed under 1,000 bond. Richard Behnken, 25, and two minors, all of Kountze, also implicated.
