Two armed men robbed the Wesley Smith grocery in Fred midmorning and fled with about $1200. Mrs. Smith, ironing nearby, saw one robber point a gun and demand the cash as the pair drove off north in a dark car, likely a late model Ford. Roadblocks were set, but the suspects remained at large.
Keith makes a brilliant save on the goal line as Silsbee and Cleveland trade momentum. Parker drives the Tigers with long gains and a near touchdown wiped out by a clipping penalty. The game remains scoreless at halftime and ends with Cleveland holding Silsbee at bay in a tense defensive duel.
A two-ball mixed scotch foursome golf tournament is planned at Silsbee Golf and Country Club next Sunday at 2 pm open to members and wives. Pro John Spiller notes the event draws interest and a hole-in-one contest will run with a 12-foot chalk circle around the cup on No. 3 green for inside shots.
Sheila Donalson 16, daughter of Mr and Mrs J D Donalson, chosen Monday night to represent Silsbee September 27 in the Hardin County Centennial celebration as Miss Silsbee. Contest featured 18 finalists from eight towns with local PTA sponsorship and citywide parade floats sought for the Miss Hardin County event.
Funeral services were held Wednesday for W. D. Parker 29 a millwright at East Texas Pulp and Paper Evadale who was killed Monday in a plant accident. Parker slipped into a running chip conveyor belt and fell about 25 feet. He left a wife Doris two daughters Di anne and Rebecca Ann and a son Douglas. Born in Pitkin Louisiana he had worked at the mill since March 1955. Burial was in Morse cemetery under Farmer Funeral Home direction.
Mr and Mrs M J Black of Conroe spent the weekend with Mr and Mrs F A McMicken at their home.
Property owners in Chance-Loeb Independent School District voted down three bond and tax measures to fund new classrooms. Ballots showed 288 to 214 against the bond, 293 to 216 against bonded debt, and 287 to 237 against the tax-rate increase from 1.25 to 1.50 per 100 valuation. Election judge was C. M. Lamb and polling occurred at the school.
The Ladies Golf Association will hold their monthly tournament on Tuesday September 23 with bridge starting at 10 a.m. and golf scores due by 2 p.m. Mrs Tom Benson announced. The next business meeting is Tuesday October 14 at 10 a.m. with Mrs C B Watts Jr presiding.
Harvey Robinson of Silsbee, part of a quartet of escapees from Hardin County jail, was recaptured in Beaumont and returned to Kountze. Sheriff Whitaker reported other arrests for the week include one DWI, one traffic violation, and nine drunken driving cases. Two county court cases were disposed of, both on DWI counts. Chesley Cutler, 52, of Houston, paid $50 and costs after pleading guilty, and Billie Griffis of Jasper also paid a like penalty after entering a guilty plea on an old DWI set for trial.
Boys ages eight to ten and their parents will meet at the Silsbee Junior High auditorium Tuesday at 7 30 PM to discuss forming a new Cub Scout pack. Jim Scheirer, Boy Scout executive of Beaumont, will attend to answer questions and assist organizing this pack. The group is sponsored by the local PTA.
The Forward Program of Church Finance at First Baptist Church climaxes with a 7 30 dinner in the Junior High School cafeteria. About 600 reservations expected plus 200 children eight and under in nursery party. Mrs B R Walker chairs dinner committee with Mrs W H Taylor supervising cafeteria staff. Campaign began Aug 31 to Sept 28 with pledge day Sunday. John J Fordinal is general chairman. The aim is to inform members about budget needs and possibilities.
Mrs Worthey and Mrs Cruse of Colmesweil visited Sunday in the home of Mr and Mrs Fritz Gossett.
The Silsbee Bee held its first week football guessing contest with 32 entrants. E. C. Nash, Evadale Schools Superintendent, won $20 for predicting 11 game outcomes. W. P. McGarahan, Silsbee assistant junior high coach, placed second with $10 after tie-breakers. Roy Martin of Silsbee took third for a $5 prize. A new contest runs this week with entry deadlines Friday at 5 p.m.
The Parent-Teacher Association held a 3:30 PM meeting at the High School. Committees and room mother chairmen were named, a publicity chair was elected, and plans were made for a cub pack, a rummage sale October 17-18, and a Civil Defense talk by guest speaker Mrs. J. A. Raney of Beaumont. Prizes were awarded to the class with the most parents present.
Hale-Aiken study proposes lengthening Texas school term to nine and a half or ten months if recommendations are adopted. Local districts would gain tax options away from ad valorem, and districts would cover milk and lunch program costs without federal aid. Enrollment tops 3,000. hiring and tax collections update the board.
Silsbee's junior high Tiger football team hosts the Dick Dowling squad of Beaumont at Kirby stadium for the second game of the season. Game time is 7 30 p m. Last week Silsbee routed Kountze 38 0 with 38 players seeing action and a set of touchdowns by Tarver Gilbert Edmondson Clawson with passes from Read.
The Hardin County Grand Jury at Kountze, April term 1958, reports 55 true bills 53 felonies two capital offenses no-billed 24 charges and 12 cases sent to next Grand Jury. Bail set at 1000 dollars per case. Foreman Lester Caraway commends DA and deputies and asks discharge.
Evadale Rebels meet Chester Yellow Jackets tomorrow night at Rebel Stadium Evadale game starts 7 30 p m. Evadale opened with a 6 0 loss to Shepherd and were beaten 57 6 by San Augustine last Friday Bert Fling coaches Evadale.
Sinclair Oil & Gas Company sent a check for 150000 plus to Silsbee Independent School District covering 1958 school taxes. The early payment helps avoid an interim loan for school operations, per Superintendent Don L. Hough. A accompanying letter praised the school office and payroll timing, signed by Owen L. Bergman. Weekend visitors included Mr and Mrs Herbert Geis endor and Mr and Mrs W E Wilson of Lake Charles, plus Sgt and Mrs Jimmy Wilson and family of Fort Hood.
