Drug Education Workshop Planned in Beaumont

A two day Drug Education Workshop sponsored by Region V Education Service Center will be held October 14 and 15 at the Holiday Inn in Beaumont. Beaumont teachers and drug experts will present films and programs on drugs and drug abuse. The first workshop took place September 21 and 22.

Absentee Voting Opens Oct 14 For Texas Election

Voters may cast absentee ballots from Oct 14 to Oct 30 in the Nov 3 general election. Any qualified Texas voter away from home Nov 3 can vote by presenting a registration certificate to the county clerk during office hours. The ballot includes seven proposed constitutional amendments covering judges, alcohol, land assessment, building commission, road bonds, homestead exemption, and government consolidation. Texas has 4,150,645 registered voters. absentee voting normally accounts for about five percent of turnout.

Ground School Begins Next Thursday in Silsbee

Ground School classes leading to a private pilot license start 7 30 p m Thursday Oct 15 at the City Hall Annex Silsbee. The 18 week course is taught by Bert Keller FAA Certified Flight Instructor with weekly sessions of about two and a half to three hours.

Man Shot In Tavern Fight October 3

Virgil Hill, 48, of 3604 Avenue B, Nederland, was listed in satisfactory condition at St. Elizabeth Hospital after a .45 caliber pistol shot during a tavern fight on October 3. No charges have been filed. the case expected before the fall term Grand Jury meeting October 19. The shooting occurred about 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Jim Barnes' Tavern on Highway 92 north of Silsbee.

Three Killed Four Injured In Head-On Crash West Of Kountze

A Friday 7:30 p.m. head-on crash on FM 770, eight and a half miles west of Kountze, killed three people from two Houston area families and Liberty, and injured four others. victims listed as Lawrence M Huffman 38 of Houston and his son Michael Lane 14, and Bomen Lamar Ryan 22 of Liberty. Ryan was alone in his car. Remainder of Huffman car passengers were treated at St Elizabeth Beaumont. Ricky Darrell Huffman 16 and Raymond Huffman 8 were released. Post Office Contract Awarded for New Houston Area Building

The U S Post Office awarded a 242 007 contract to John W Jennings of Jennings Industries Houston on Oct 1 for a 10 080 square foot building at the southwest corner of US 96 and West Avenue P in Silsbee with completion planned by 1971 The department may buy 59 733 additional square feet at 40 000 and the current 4100 square foot Fifth Street site will be replaced by the larger facility.

City Police Investigate Five Burglaries Thefts

Silsbee police probed three coin machine burglaries a residential burglary and a felony theft of 130 dollars reported for Oct 4 5. Incidents occurred at H A Thomas Garage Harrod's Laundry and O Neil Intermediate School with small cash losses and a recovered six dollars in change. A patrolman's home was entered with a recording played. another resident reported a 130 dollar billfold theft. Police said all cases were under investigation. Nearby residents Sherry Smith and a baby were visiting local families.

Charles Landgraf Named National Merit Semi Finalist

Silsbee High School senior Charles L. Landgraf, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester P. Landgraf, is named a National Merit Scholarship semi finalist. Finalists will be announced in February 1971 with 15000 finalists vying for 1000 scholarships. Landgraf has served as SHS student body president, co editor of the school paper, National Honor Society member, track athlete, Texas Youth Conference delegate, Eagle Scout and Capitol Page at the Library of Congress.

Redistricting Suit Set For Trial In Beaumont Today

The Hardin County reapportionment suit was set for a trial at 10 a.m. in U S District Court Beaumont before Judge Joe J Fisher. The case follows an order to the county to work with the Citizens Redistricting Committee on an acceptable plan. Attorneys argued about fraud and jurisdiction as the judge scheduled further evidence for Oct 8.

Youth, 16, Charged With Knifing Of 14 Year-Old Boy

A 16-year-old Silsbee youth was arrested on assault with intent to murder after a fight with a 14-year-old. The younger boy was treated for cuts at Silsbee Doctors Hospital following the 10:10 p.m. Oct. 4 incident. The older youth was taken to Kountze and turned over to Hardin County juvenile authorities.
