Court to Decide Fate Of Six Small Children In Kountze

Six Hardin county children ages 1 to 12 face court action Friday at 10 in Kountze to determine if they will be removed from their parents. Parents jailed for drunkenness with a history of offenses. A 12 year old girl and siblings aged 10 6 4 1 year old twins cared for by a 12 year old sister. Children housed in a shared hovel and a neighbor's car while authorities seek foster or orphan placement. Hearing set in 88th District Courtroom before Judge H A Coe.

Veterans to Be Honored on Memorial Day Observance

Members of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will place small flags on graves at Knupple and Resthaven cemeteries for Memorial Day observance. They conducted a buddy poppy sale in Silsbee and plan to share funds with disabled veterans, the veterans orphans home, and a local fund aiding needy veterans and families.

Parade to Open Vacation Bible School at First Baptist

A parade Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. will launch the Vacation Bible School at First Baptist Church. Registration at the church, then a parade departure. Bible School runs June 2–6 each morning 8 to 11 for ages 3 through 16 with about 65 workers led by Rev. R. E. Barclay who invites the public.

Polio Foundation Officers For Coming Year Elected

The Silsbee Chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis elected new officers for the year. W. E. Martin of Kountze was named chairman with M. L. Wilson as vice chairman and George N. Christian as secretary and treasurer. Directors include F. H. Carpenter and Russell Allen of Sour Lake and W. D. Cruse. Cecil Cobble reported the finances.

A bond election hearing for Road District Seven in the Evadale Gist area will be held Saturday May 31 in the Jasper County courthouse. Commissioner J W Jones and the Road District Seven Committee urge Jasper County residents to express views to county officials at the meeting.

Houston Natural Gas employees and their families held a fish fry at John Teel's camp on the Neches river at Damp Satur. Fish and tramings were served. Twenty attended.

Negro Man Is Charged For Murder In Kountze

LeRoy Cotton 39 is charged with murder after a confrontation with Herbert Long located on a Kountze back porch Saturday. Cotton says Long attacked him with a garden rake. Cotton struck back with the rake head. Cotton provided a lie detector test result supporting his story and is held on $5000 bond as the grand jury probes the case.

Silsbee Little League Minors schedule 25 games listed

Mrs. M. M. Bell says 25 of a 36 game Minor League schedule remain in Silsbee Little League Baseball. All games are at Little League Park starting mostly at 5 p.m. Details include teams Morris Chance-Loeb Minimax East Texas and dates from May 29 through July 10 with 4:00 p.m. times noted.

Bank Presents Gifts To Schools Of Area

Silsbee State Bank has purchased six large framed copies of the Declaration of Independence to present to local schools. Executive vice-president E. M. Wilson Jr. notes the lithographic reproductions were created over years by Czech immigrant Theodore W. Ohman, inspired by this country and its founding document.

Council Opens Bids On Water Distribution Job

Six bids were received for city water system improvements in Silsbee. Engineer Spence T. Love explained unit price tabulation to determine the true low bidder. Residents near Dardin Drive urged street lights to curb thefts. Gulf States engineers to survey, recommend locations. Council approved up to 300 for three Fire Dept men attending school in College Station. Bills from Rauscher Pierce and J R Phillips Investment Co. totaling 11 355 and 1686 reimb. for bond issue work were ordered paid.

City Council Special Meeting Sets Bids on Water Distribution

Tonight the city council meets to review bids on water distribution projects. Apparent low bidder is Gerald Mora of Houston at 171486.75, second low Century Construction of Houston at 176022.40, with revised figures around 143000 and 146000 within bond limits.

Low Bidder Named in City Contract Awards

The council announced a low bidder for a city contract with Gerald Mora of Houston submitting $171,486.75. Century Construction Co. of Houston followed at $175,707.40, with Wyman Construction and Texala Construction in the high four figures. A council delegation of eight residents attended the bid opening and routine business was conducted prior to the bids.

Twenty Three Have Enforced Visit At County's Expense

Deputy Dave Rountree reported twenty three offenders processed in the county jail over the past week. The arrests included one murder, four robberies by assault, 11 drunks, one game law violation, one bond forfeiture, and one traffic case. Leroy Cotton, 39, of Kountze, was charged with murdering another Kountze man in a Saturday night altercation in the colored quarters.
