Growing Grass In Shade In Texas Is A Challenge
Texas Agricultural Extension Service warns shade makes grass growth hard though pruning can ease the issue. Selective pruning improves air flow and reduces turf diseases, with best times varying for evergreens, early spring bloomers, and deciduous trees. In hot periods water deeply every 7 to 10 days, slightly dry between waterings, and raise fertilizer rates for shaded lawns. St Augustine tolerates shade in Central and South Texas. mowing height should be kept higher to preserve leaf area. Ground covers like English ivy ajuga and periwinkle are alternatives in deep shade, or use mulch if plants won’t grow.
