Texas lawmakers eye sales tax clash in bid to fund schools
In Austin, the 57th Legislature faces a money fight between Gov. Price Daniel, who opposes a general sales tax, and a Senate bloc leaning toward one. Sen. Wardlow Lane leads the Senate group with others including Bruce Reagan, Dorsey Hardeman, Jep Fuller and Tom Creighton. Daniel warns of a veto and proposes a package tax plan targeting eight areas to raise about 166 million annually. The House passes teacher pay raises, boosting base salaries and experience steps, while unemployment benefits faces an increase in both amount and duration. A Senate bill seeks emergency powers against enemy attack, provoking debate on constitutional amendment scope.

Texas House Redistricting Moves Slowly Toward 1960 Realignment
Texas legislature debates House and Senate redistricting tied to the 1960 census. House finalizes a bill to reshuffle districts, lifting urban representation while reducing rural seats. The plan increases urban reps to near 100 600 people per seat, forcing retirements or challenged seats. Senate action slowed by filibuster on senatorial district redraws.
