Unemployed Drop and Hiring Rise In March Labor Report

Legislature Faces End of Session Tax Fight And Reforms
The Texas Legislature rushes to finish essential business by May 29 as filibusters and disagreements stall tax bills. The House sales tax plan faces two ultimatums from Gov. Price Daniel, while Sen. Henry Gonzalez vows to filibuster in the Senate. Comptroller Calvert estimates the bill could raise over 159 million annually, guiding the budget battle. A ten‑man conference irons out the general appropriations bill, with House and Senate versions diverging on roughly 16 million dollars. Teachers seek full 800 dollar pay hikes, training reforms move ahead, and redistricting efforts stall due to opposition. Tax receipts for tobacco and liquor slip, fuel taxes drop, and a court ruling questions a state sales tax on radio parts. A small loan bill sparks debate over rates, while a neatnik drive targets highway litter. Additional measures address Padre Island, traffic and sanitation rules on beaches, welfare spending limits, and adult court options for youths. Short notices cover steel firms challenging a ban on foreign goods, March construction data, and improved unemployment figures as Rep. W. T. Oliver campaigns for Speaker.

Poison ivy and its relatives pose skin risks in Texas
The Health and Education Division notes that immunity to poison ivy, oak, and sumac is unlikely and susceptibility varies with person, plant, and exposure. Poison ivy remains the most common irritant, with poison oak as a grower form. Recognize the plant, wear protective clothing, and wash resin with soap and water after exposure.
