Further Study On City Budget Is Planned Tonight
Silsbee City Council will hold a work session on the 1961 62 fiscal budget tonight at city hall. City fathers met last Thursday to work out a budget for the coming year but were unable to finish. A department by department survey was made to determine where cuts could be made. Figures from the preliminary session were not final. The proposed 2400 budget item for a contribution to Silsbee Public Library was cut by 1200 to 1200. In the police department 1500 for a new police car was cut, and 500 was cut from the budget for a new car radio. Chief Grady Tarver said another year's service could be obtained from the present radio. An increase was tentatively allowed in the Civil Defense account of 2000 for installing an air raid warning siren. Original estimates of 3000 for purchase and installation were too low. City Manager B D Banks and Civil Defense Director Grant Herbst explained. The siren plus installation will run around 5000, with the federal government paying half, leaving the city portion at 2500, or an overall increase in city spending of 1000.
