Parker Leads Lions Club In First Official Meeting

Dr Wade Parker presided at the Lions Club meeting Tuesday in his first act since installation. The Future Projects committee is led by E J Dietrich with Donalson Brown and Shine assisting. other committees named for attendance new memberships, minstrel and finance. The club voted to skip July meetings and meet July 8 22 and two meetings in August.

Drunk Driver Fined in County Court and Jail Population

A county court last week fined James E. Dickey fifty dollars and costs for drunk driving and sentenced him to three days in jail. The report notes a total of 23 inmates in the county jail on various charges with arrests including disturbing the peace, threats, drunks, a felony DWI, and multiple intoxications.

Lumberton Baptist Welcomes New Pastor

The Reverend George W. Van Devender begins his Lumberton pastorate with a Sunday sermon on July 6 on the new Silsbee Beaumont highway. He comes from Jamestown Kentucky with his wife and two children and plans to lead full time. His first ministry projects include a Vacation Bible School starting August 4 and the dedication of a new 6000 dollar educational building nearing completion.

Brother of Silsbee Man Kidnapped by Cuban Rebels

Damon R. Elmore, brother of Herbert Elmore of Silsbee and son of Haynesville residents, is among about 50 Americans and Canadians held by Cuban rebel forces led by Fidel Castro near Guantanamo. Elmore, manager of a U. S. sugar and land interests operation, was seized with his wife reportedly in Cuba, with officials unsure if she is among the captives. United States officials stated the hostage group seeks U.S. intervention, and a consular contact indicated captives are being cared for.

Death Watch Opens for July 4th Weekend Fatalities

Bert Dardin assistant postmaster says starting July 1 mail with insufficient postage will incur the postage due plus a five cent short paid charge. The bulletin also raises air mail parcel limits to 70 pounds and 100 inches length and girth for overseas military post offices.

The Senate appropriations committee backed four and a half million dollars for the McGee Bend Dam. Congressman Jack Brooks relayed the decision to the Bee, with final floor action expected in about one to two weeks.

Mrs McKinney Injured In Highway 90 Crash

Mrs. Phillip McKinney of Silsbee is hospitalized in Hardin county after a Wednesday afternoon crash on highway 90 east of Crosby. With her six year old daughter Joan Marie, she was returning to Silsbee from Houston when her car overturned while avoiding a pickup making a U turn. She suffered cuts and bruises with no serious injuries. the girl was unharmed.
