Engineers expect bids for Silsbee water and sewer line extensions and other municipal works by May 1. City authorized to issue 472000 in revenue bonds and 285000 in tax bonds for the projects. Planned: 34000 feet water lines, new water well, 500000 gallon tank, 33 fire hydrants, a sewage plant, and 55330 feet additional sewer mains. McCollum Begins Serving Five Year Murder Sentence
Donald McCollum, found guilty of murder without malice in the December 19 slaying of his wife near Kountze, has been sent to Huntsville to begin a sentence of two to five years. The all male jury returned the verdict Friday morning, and McCollum cried as the verdict was read. He chose not to appeal and accepted the sentence after a brief conference with his attorney.

Paul Shepherd 74 longtime Silsbee resident dies
Paul T. Shepherd aged 74, longtime Silsbee resident and retired Santa Fe pump and water service man, died Friday afternoon at St. Therese hospital Beaumont. Funeral services were held Sunday at Prospect Methodist church near Timpson with ministers Dale Rider and Carl Brown. Survivors include wife Mary, sons Jack and Alga, daughter Dagma Hood, sister Rose Birdwell, four brothers, nine grandchildren and one great grandchild. Pallbearers listed from Jasper, Timpson, and nearby areas.

Walter M. Parrish Jr., 35, newly arrived in Silsbee, was arrested in Beaumont and charged as a fugitive from justice. He faces a $2000 bond and is held in Jefferson County jail. Authorities say he has a Florida parole violation from a 1952 armed robbery sentence and fled the state. Parrish formerly ran a floor covering business in Silsbee.
