Silsbee Plans Water and Sewer Improvements and Bond Sales

Engineers expect bids for Silsbee water and sewer line extensions and other municipal works by May 1. City authorized to issue 472000 in revenue bonds and 285000 in tax bonds for the projects. Planned: 34000 feet water lines, new water well, 500000 gallon tank, 33 fire hydrants, a sewage plant, and 55330 feet additional sewer mains. Population supported rises to about 14000 with third water well.

Vaccination Proof Required for New Silsbee Dog Licenses

Silsbee enforces a new dog license rule requiring vaccination within the last 12 months by a licensed veterinarian. Owners without vet vaccination may still obtain a license with a recent vaccination receipt. A vet will visit the city garage Friday 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.. six months and older dogs must be licensed.

Evadale School Opens Open House Week For Public Schools

Evadale school hosts an open house on Monday March 3 at 7 30 p m as Public Schools Week features the Hale Akin Survey. Classrooms of all 12 grades will be open for inspection with teachers available to discuss their class activities and parents invited to visit throughout the week. Guilty Plea In County Court Hot Check Case

Twenty one people were arrested last week and one case heard in county court on February 20. Peggy Bartley pleaded guilty to writing a hot check and was fined $1 plus costs. arrests included one drunk in car four assault with intent to murder and others for drunkenness and traffic offenses.

Local United Appeals Meeting Set For Monday Night

A public meeting is scheduled for Monday at 7 30 p m in the Silsbee high school cafeteria to discuss the United Appeals fund raising organization led by J C Perkins local trustee. The 1958 UA drive ends March 17 with countywide setup and a Hardin county focus. Rev Grant Herbst is county drive chairman. The 1959 drive will align with UA drives in Jefferson and Orange counties likely in September.

McCollum Begins Serving Five Year Murder Sentence

Donald McCollum, found guilty of murder without malice in the December 19 slaying of his wife near Kountze, has been sent to Huntsville to begin a sentence of two to five years. The all male jury returned the verdict Friday morning, and McCollum cried as the verdict was read. He chose not to appeal and accepted the sentence after a brief conference with his attorney.

Houston Minister Guest Speaker at First Presbyterian

Rev. A. E. Rushmann of Houston will be guest speaker at 11 o clock Sunday services at First Presbyterian Church. He will serve as supply pastor for several weeks and is a stated clerk of the Brazos Presbytery. Clifton Caraway noted a full time minister will arrive soon.

Cotton Landis Takes Over Former B and B Station

Co. R. Cotton Landis assumes operation of the former B and B Sinclair Service station at the corner of Highway 96 and Ave N and will run Landis Sinclair Service Station. Landis, a Silsbee native and Silsbee High School graduate, previously ran a local drayage business and worked for Santa Fe Railroad.

Baptist Church to Observe Annie Armstrong Week of Prayer

The First Baptist Church will host the Annie Armstrong Home Mission Week of Prayer next week with morning sessions at 9 30 on Monday Tuesday Thursday and Friday and a Wednesday night session at 7 45. The Women's Missionary Society sponsors the observance with Mrs. Sam Yawn Jr. in charge.

Paul Shepherd 74 longtime Silsbee resident dies

Paul T. Shepherd aged 74, longtime Silsbee resident and retired Santa Fe pump and water service man, died Friday afternoon at St. Therese hospital Beaumont. Funeral services were held Sunday at Prospect Methodist church near Timpson with ministers Dale Rider and Carl Brown. Survivors include wife Mary, sons Jack and Alga, daughter Dagma Hood, sister Rose Birdwell, four brothers, nine grandchildren and one great grandchild. Pallbearers listed from Jasper, Timpson, and nearby areas.

Junior Class Ends Old Newspaper Pickups at Silsbee High

Local Boxing Club To Send Team To Matches In Orange

Nine members of Silsbee Amateur Boxing Club will compete at the National Guard Armory in Orange tomorrow night. First bout at 8 p.m. Plans call for return matches in Silsbee on March 14. Boxers include Carl Bonner, Douglas Arnold, Don Reach, Don Creekmore, LaVone McBroom, John H. Nolen, Buddy Weems, Billy Barclay, and Cecil Arnold. Tator Sheffield was to box but broke his hand.

Lions Minstrel Show Nets Over 450 For Club

Silsbee Lions report the ninth annual minstrel show last Friday drew a near record crowd. Secretary Paul Georgas said proceeds exceed 450 dollars, to fund further Lions service work.

Hospital Auxiliary Hears Dr. E. Gant in Kountze

Dr. Eugenia Gant spoke to the Hardin County Hospital Auxiliary in Kountze on February 20 about the hospital’s progress and improvement. Mrs. Cleo Cowan presided, and Mrs. Roberta Richardson led the auction. The four year old group supported the hospital, buying a rental TV for January. Sixteen members paid 1958 dues and three new members joined Leona Mobley Mrs W C Dehart and Mrs Stout Collier. Next meeting is March 20.

City restricts BB gun use within Silsbee limits

Silsbee bans firing BB guns or air rifles inside the city after council approval. City Manager Bill Pennington noted the ordinance enforces fines from 5 to 100 dollars for violations, following citizen complaints about window breakage and hazardous shooting.

Delays occur from complex returns, different deductions, unread handwriting, missing signatures, or missing W-2 forms. Silsbee Man Charged as Fugitive From Justice

Walter M. Parrish Jr., 35, newly arrived in Silsbee, was arrested in Beaumont and charged as a fugitive from justice. He faces a $2000 bond and is held in Jefferson County jail. Authorities say he has a Florida parole violation from a 1952 armed robbery sentence and fled the state. Parrish formerly ran a floor covering business in Silsbee.

Kiwanis Club hosts a hotcake supper at the Junior High cafeteria tonight from 5 to 8 PM. Earl Stover says the menu features hotcakes crisp bacon syrup and coffee with seconds available. Tickets are one dollar at the door or from members with proceeds supporting activities for city youth.
