Hardin county voters approved a 1.5 million right of way bond to widen highways and acquire land for new roads. Unofficial tally 756 Yes to 140 No with Village Mills in support 10 to 8. Funds target five year program and $3 million in awaiting construction.
City resumes work on the main feeder line to the new sewer plant after a lawsuit by Mrs. Minnie G Woodward and family over easement and damages was settled out of court. The dispute with Texala Construction Co halted work briefly until a $100 settlement was paid and the project continued.
Three men Ronald Burdett Port Arthur William P Williams Beaumont and Fred Grimes Galveston pleaded guilty in county court at Kountze. They were fined 50 dollars and costs and three days in jail each with one man also paying 25 dollars and costs for driving with a suspended license. DWI convictions bring six month license suspension. A total of 20 arrests that week were reported by county officers. Alvin E Powell 21 of Port Arthur faced burglary charges for Cochran Grocery theft after being found in a car stolen from Gulf States Utilities. The old Kirby doctor's office in Silsbee was burglarized with two fans taken.
The Liberty Draft Board 86 seeks registrant F. K. Barnett of Silsbee, listing 160 S. 16th St. as his address and noting employment with R. T. Walker pulp wood contractor.
The Evadale School Parent-Teacher Association met at the school Monday night with Rev. Grant Herbst pastor of St. John’s Episcopal Church of Silsbee as guest speaker. The school band performed a concert of 12 selections after the talk.
Silsbee Tigers lost 70 33 to Buna after opening 58 42 defeat in the Beau mont YMBL. they also fell to Big Sandy 42 37 and Beaumont high 64 39 in prior starts. Coach Hetherington leads team to Kountze next, then Baytown, Orange tourneys, with further games at Kirbyville and Jasper upcoming.
Silsbee schools will dismiss for Christmas holidays this Friday December 19. High School principal Bruce Watts Jr. announced classes will resume Monday January 5. Mrs. O C Sevly returned Friday after a week in San Antonio with relatives.
The Silsbee Fire Department with 85 attendees held its annual Christmas Party at the Fire Hall. Firemen received jackets and Santa distributed gifts to all the children and to spouses and trustees.
A Christmas playlet titled Birth of Jesus and Crucifixion of Christ will be presented at All Faith Tabernacle Saturday night at 7 45. Rev C Vaughn pastor invites the public to attend at the church located two miles north of town.
Kirbyville junior high tournament action sees Silsbee Cubs post a 4-1 run in consolation with wins over Little Cypress West Orange and Kirbbyville, a 35-33 loss to Kirbyville in opener, and a 62-37 victory over Victor. The team prepares for Groves clash at home this Thursday with games scheduled at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Funeral services for Samuel Stevens Van Camp of 305 3rd St were held at 8 a m in Farmer Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Harclay officiating. Survived by daughter Mrs George Plunk and son Mr Van Camp of Huntsville plus three grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Burial at Ten-Mile cemetery near Fenton Arkansas. Silsbee merchants vote to stay open until 8 p m from Dec 18 to Dec 23 to aid Christmas shoppers with schedules posted across town.
Mr and Mrs Sam Farrell visited Sunday afternoon in Winnie at the home of Mr and Mrs Clarence Hodges and family.
The First Baptist Church will present Christmas Oratorio a playlet written by Camille st Saens Sunday night at 7 30 in the sanctuary Marion Walton directs the program Readings and performances feature a long list of contributors including sopranos altos tenors and bass vocalists from the church community in a festive holiday program
Mr and Mrs Jim Levins celebrate their golden wedding with an open house at their home on the Spurger highway near the Hardin Tyler county line. Fred natives now reside there. Calling hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Silsbee Garden Club cancels the Christmas decorating contest due to illness among committee members. Judging had been set for Saturday night.
Contributions to the Silsbee Community Christmas Basket Fund total about 250 with more reports pending. Dietrich urges last minute gifts and lists contact numbers for donations and name submissions. Friday December 19 is the deadline to submit needy-family lists. Food baskets will be distributed on Christmas Eve.
Doyle Buzz McDonald lately stationed in Germany with the US Army has received his discharge. He is now visiting his parents Mr. and Mrs. E McDonald.
Silsbee city council approved purchasing a Plymouth police car. Donalson Motor Company was the low bidder at 1254 plus trade. Silsbee Auto Co. bid 1678 less on a Ford. Miller Dunbar Motor Co. bid 1694 less on a Chevrolet. Max Zeller urged taxi franchise action but council said no move while Rex Fones holds it. Concrete work on Woodlea Boulevard ditch was approved with council member Landolt noting erosion concerns.
Mrs. Edgar O'Neil, 405 N 5th, was hospitalized at Baptist Hospital in Beamont after a Tuesday fall while walking along an alley behind businesses on Ave H. X-rays showed a broken hip and she awaits surgery at Parker and Copeland Clinic.

Silsbee area church youths plan a community Christmas caroling event on Monday December 22 coordinated by the Silsbee Ministers' Fellowship. Meet at First Baptist Church at 6 PM depart at 6 30 PM and return for refreshments at 7 30 PM.
Mrs J T Cawley came home Sunday following a ten day stay in San Angelo with her mother Mrs Ira Ogden who suffered a fall and is confined at St John’s Hospital with broken bones.
