Texas tax plan would shift vehicle levy to legislature
A Texas Commission on State and Local Tax Policy proposes amending the constitution to exempt motor vehicles from property tax while letting the Legislature set a value based tax. A state board would value vehicles, with county collectors charging 1.50 per 100 of value at tag time. 40 percent of the receipts would fund county school districts, the rest cities by population. Counties must spend funds on roads before the plan goes to the Legislature, with a fall public hearing planned.
