In a Hardin County courtroom the nine men and three women returned a verdict of murder with malice against William Bryant Bowles. District Attorney Stanley Coe urged life imprisonment, praising the jury for a definite service to the county. Bowles exhorted jurors with a sharp remark about arming a hole for slapping wives as his wife wept. defense plans a new-trial motion. The verdict ends a closely watched seven day trial amid ongoing courthouse construction and attendance by spectators and jurors from nearby towns.
Betty Hooks 11 of Silsbee will appear on the Don Mahoney Bar-C show in Beaumont at 4 30 p m Sunday on Channel 6. She will sing a number and act in a Don Mahoney film due for release in New York this weekend.
Paul and Ellen Johnson return to Silsbee after a ten week visit with relatives in Galveston. Paul attends Camp Perry YMCA day camp advancing in horsemanship and swimming and earns Flying Fish Club membership along with nine feathers and two badges. George Hare heads to Salt Lake City and San Diego for two week visits. H G Reeves and T M Pickett family members receive hospital care and travel plans. several locals attend training at Sam Houston in Huntsville. Robert Davis recovers after a high voltage shock on an oil rig. Lt Tommy Hardy departs for Biloxi to join Keesler AFB.
Lumberton Baptist Church kicks off a revival on Sunday August 10 with Rev. George W Van Devender as preacher. Mrs Paul Nash at piano, Bobby Grafton leads choir, Miss Margaret Rose Nash directs Junior Choir. Services 7 45 p m nightly. Vacation Bible School begins with about 80 boys and girls earning certificates.
City Manager Bill Pennington announced receipt of a wire from U. S. Representative Jack Brooks and Senators Lyndon Johnson and Ralph Yarborough confirming federal aid of 100,975 for stream pollution control in the Silsbee sewer treatment plant project. He said funds will enable a work order and start contractor work once funds arrive.
At Silsbee Golf and Country Club a Pro-Am won by Buck Barclay and teammates Buck Barclay, B Runte, Joe Stokes, H H Reynolds, and J C Guidry drew a small crowd due to heat and vacation season. Second place went to Johnny Barlow, Morgan Rodemacher, A G Faulkner, Price Day, and Sam McGee. A local group plans another Pro-Am in Port Arthur Friday, per John Spillar.
Kirby Lumber Corp will close its local sawmill for a two week vacation beginning Sunday. Logging operations and the sawmill will pause, followed a week later by the planing mill resuming after logging and mill activity restart.
Harry Lee David three son of Mr and Mrs Horace David of Silsbee is recovering from a ground rattlesnake bite suffered Tuesday while playing in his back yard. He was rushed to a local clinic for treatment and showed signs of improvement on Wednesday after a restless night.
J C Ishmal of Honey Island faces murder charges in Justice Berniece Seales court at Kountze after a Friday night shooting over livestock and fencing. He allegedly fired the first shot in a volley of about 30 rounds that killed Mrs Edith Flowers. Ishmal posted 1500 bond. case to proceed before the grand jury. Funeral services for Flowers were held Sunday at Phelps cemetery between Saratoga and White Oak. Deputy reports ten other arrests that week including two traffic, two disturbances, and six drunks.
A series of birth notices from Hardin County Hospital. Toni Yvonne Ramsey and Mitchell Wayne Eason are born July 2 and August 1 respectively to local families in Batson and Silsbee. Patricia Ann Boyett and Donny Lynn Cottongim greet Aug. 1 and Aug. 3. Various families in Kountze Kirbyville and Silsbee welcomed new daughters and sons in late July and early August.
Plans for the annual Methodist Youth Activities Week set for August 11 to 16 feature Rev. John Rentfro as platform speaker from First Methodist Church Beaufort. Youths will lead services with study sessions titled I Believe taught by Earl Stover for seniors and Cecil Cobble with Glenda Cox for intermediates. The theme is Loyalty to Christ and daily events run 6 30 p.m. to 10 p.m.
The Silsbee Key Club received a Certificate of Merit from the International Board in Chicago. J. Frank McCabe, Director of Key Clubs, presented the award, noting only top clubs nationwide receive this distinction.
The Hardin County Democratic convention met in Fort Worth area on Saturday with Lester Caraway named permanent chairman and Houston Thompson as permanent secretary. Four resolutions were adopted on pledge support, voter registration law, precinct delegation, and unit rule. Delegates named to the state convention next month include Mr. and Mrs. Win Free, Mr. and Mrs. Haske Wilson, Lester Caraway, Mr. and Mrs. D. E. Lack, Houston Thompson, Frank Carpenter Richargeon, Archer, Mr. and Mrs. W. C Dd Haighten, Davis Cook, and others.
Woodrow Baptist Church plans complete air conditioning of its new church building. Pastor Rev Bobby Roberts said the project should be ready by Sunday, with the educational wing and other sections nearing completion. The air conditioning is one more step in finishing the new church structure not yet occupied by the Woodrow Baptist congregation.
Evadale high schools Rebels release a 10 game football schedule announced by Supt E C Nash. The season includes five home and five district games with district opponents China Fanette Hamshire Barbers Hill and Saratoga.
Construction of the brick Presbyterian manse on Read Street Woodlea addition is moving quickly. Pastor Larry Correu says contractor Jake May of Silsbee handles the project. Sunday’s 11 am service features E D Fredrick of Westminster Beaumont preaching on Making Gods Word Mine with Correll on vacation. Church School at 10 am and choir at 7 30 pm follow.
Miss Ann McNeil daughter of Dr and Mrs W C McNeil of this city departs today first leg of a year teaching at an army installation in Japan. She will fly Dallas to San Francisco then to the Orient aboard a California bound ship. Formerly a Houston speech therapist and UT graduate she has traveled widely including a European summer.
I R Jones of Silsbee is back home from the hospital after a collision on 11th Street in Beamon last week. He suffered several broken bones an injured chest and back in the rain wreck that demolished his pick up.
Southwestern Bell invites Buna residents to an open house at the Buna telephone building to view the new dial system. Employees will guide tours behind the scenes at the central office and explain exhibits. Hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today and Friday, with visitors from Silsbee and nearby towns welcome.
