Texas Teachers Seek More Funds Amid Tutor Shortage
Dana Williams of the Texas State Teachers Association warns that over 100000 Texas school children lack qualified teachers. The state education agency issued 3062 emergency certificates this year and now grants teaching permits at about 125 weekly to applicants with only a high school diploma. Williams calls for at least $50 million more in the legislature to raise base pay to 3204 plus 180 in increments and to attract and retain qualified teachers for Texas students.
