Husbands fear returning home to find wardrobe missing as wives hold multiple rummage sales. Last Saturday saw six events boosting church treasuries with hundreds of dollars, including near $100 from one sale and other gains of $65, $25, and $20. The women pride themselves on neat displays and brisk sales, while men worry about inventories as the rummage drive continues alongside cotton picking into fall.
Advertisements in The Herald announce a milk price increase starting next Wednesday October 1 in Sikeston. Dairymen cite higher labor and material costs and general overhead as the cause. Local dairies fear St Louis buyers and CCC influenced demand reduce raw milk supply, risking further cuts to products like buttermilk.
Sikeston markets show No 2 wheat at 1.03 per bu and white corn at 0.62 per bu, yellow corn at 0.62, oats at 0.40, and Leghorn hens per pound. Eggs sell 0.30 per dozen while cotton drops from 18 to 16 1/4 cents a pound. picking wages fall to 1.10 per hundred as nearly 40 percent of the crop is harvested. Cotton seed price rises to 50 per ton amid growing demand and rain delays picking crews.
The Sikeston area hums with harvest activity as seed cotton flows to gins and baled cotton moves to the Sikeston Compress and Warehouse, which now stores about 37,500 bales. About 110 workers compress and bale cotton for shipment, while the Sikeston Cotton Oil Mill runs 24 hours converting seed to oil with capacity increased to 13,000 tons annually.
State Trooper John Tandy early yesterday detained two runaway boys, Lyle Ogle 17 and Winfred Ogle 19, cousins from Milan Missouri, who said they planned to travel to Tennessee to visit relatives. They rode in a 1937 Ford owned by the older boy’s father and were released to relatives today.
Harold W. Fink of Cape Girardeau drove north on Highway 61 and crashed into Mary Reed of Morehouse, overturning in a ditch seven miles north of Sikeston. Reed was with N. R. Nickell. Fink was alone, state trooper John Tandy reported.
Frank Mortier of Bloomington Indiana began his duties this morning as assistant manager of the Sikeston J C Penney Store. Mortier has eight years with the company and started training in Cedar Rapids Iowa in 1933. He succeeds Archie Beasley who was transferred to Paducah Kentucky after serving as assistant manager since the store opened.
Sikeston Kiwanis and town groups plan Hospital Day on Sunday September 28 to celebrate Sikeston General Hospital's first birthday. The event features gifts including a nurse's desk from the local Women’s Junior Chamber of Commerce and a water cooler from the American Legion Auxiliary. Donations of sheets pillowcases baby clothes and kitchenware are requested, with pickup at the hospital rear door. about 26 people are served daily and further gifts are encouraged.
Diogenes of Sikeston would approve as J Francis Helton rushed to Heisserers Drug Store to report a wallet with 181 dollars found. Leroy Heisserer returned the wallet intact. the owner, Hiram Cullins of Crowder, was to be contacted. The Herald could not confirm further rewards.
Troop 43 of Sikeston Boy Scouts will defend their district swimming title at the annual meet on Saturday September 27 at the swimming pool. Preliminaries are Saturday morning with finals in the afternoon. Frank Chase district Scout executive will supervise the event.
Sikeston vendors report record Saturday business as cotton money floods in from farmers. Crowds flood streets and stores packed with shoppers while clerks struggle to keep up. Cotton prices around $100 per bale and cottonseed near $50 a ton drive renewed activity and wages for pickers rise to two dollars per hundred.
Meteorologist Albert Klamm of the Missouri Institute of Aeronautics predicts a clear cool weekend for Sikeston. Last week peaked at 92 degrees on Tuesday September 25 with a low of 50 on Sunday night September 21. A yesterday afternoon wind storm produced light rain as the tail end of the Texas gulf coast hurricane, with no local damage reported.
Paul Wiggins of Decatur Illinois will arrive this weekend to join his wife who is visiting relatives in the area.
Lyman R. Bowman, general manager of Scott County Milling Company, said the plant may not reopen Monday as reported. Workers at mills in Sikeston and Dexter and Oran did not report to work. Pickets stand guard as negotiations between company officials and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Chauffeurs and Helpers continue after fruitless talks. Two National Labor Relations Board conciliators were on site this week.
L. F. Livingston of Du Pont Company will address farmers and business men in Sikeston Friday night at 7 for a dinner meeting at the Methodist church dining room. Tickets are available from Kiwanis members or Chamber of Commerce officials. The event, hosted by Sikeston Kiwanis, is sponsored by the Missouri State Chemurgic Commission to illustrate industrial uses for farm crops with a display of chemical products made from agricultural materials.
Mrs Bell McBride, patient at St Francis Hospital in Cape Girardeau for two weeks, was taken to her daughter Mrs Walter Rayburn's home yesterday afternoon. She sustained injuries in an accident north of town and is recovering slowly, needing bed rest for another month.
