Convicted for Draft Evasion in Missouri Federal Court
Harry Lambert, 20, a Jehovah’s Witness minister from Illinois, was found guilty without a jury before Judge Rubey M. Hulen in Cape Girardeau Federal Court on charges of failing to report for a physical and for induction. He testified he has ministered since age 13 and had registered in Scott County with a deferment request. The court noted it cannot classify men but only rule on alleged violations. Lambert appealed, but the district board ordered him to report for duty.

Seed salvage begins in Mississippi County
The salvage of watermelon seed on a commercial basis began in Mississippi county this week on several hundred acres of melons remaining in the fields. Machinery and a crew of men led by Eugene Hampton and his wife of Monticello Florida supervise the work. They aim to salvage about 10,000 pounds of seed, while farmers have started pasturing some fields, and roughly 600 cars of melons were shipped from the county this season.
