Concrete Apron On Hangar Construction At Army Detachment
Work on the new hangar at the army pilot training detachment begins Monday with pouring a 60 foot deep apron across the front. The project requires 350 cubic yards of dirt fill and 10 days of floor pouring after steel erection starts. Ten shifts and 14 workers are planned, with occupancy expected by November 15 and cadet training to begin October 19.

George Rechtin a 35 year old unemployed linesman killed himself with a .410 shotgun at his boarding house on Matthews Avenue about 8 pm last Saturday. He died instantly with the top of his head blown out. He lived as a boarder with Mr and Mrs C W Hunott at 603 Matthews Ave. Rechtin left behind a widow and two sons and had recently sought time off to move them to Paragould. He had been drinking heavily and had been absent from the boarding house for a week prior to the tragedy. Burial was in Paragould.

The Stoddard Street resurfacing with asphaltic concrete was ordered by the city council on Monday, work began Tuesday from North Street to the Missouri Pacific tracks, cost not to exceed 60 cents per front foot. Also approved were tax bills for the project and for Scott Street, paving accepted on Scott and Maplewood, and a WPA tennis and handball courts project up to 4000 dollars. A building permit committee was formed, granting permits for a warehouse on Highway 60 east and a proposed 10000 dollar brick veneer church at Tanner and Taylor streets, with decision delayed on the church permit. Police reported 38 arrests, 88 dollars in fines. two fires attended, and tax and water/light reports approved along with the surplus commodities building store purchase proposal.

Home Guard to Be Organized Here Soon
Applications for the Home Guard were received this week and are expected to be accepted within days. Col. Harry Dudley of the 140th Infantry Missouri National Guard said officers will be elected after twenty three enlistments. Service is voluntary and unpaid. The Home Guard will replace the National Guard, which departs next month for a year of training at Camp Joseph Robinson near Little Rock Arkansas.

Sikeston's highways 61 and 60 show the sharpest rise in daily traffic per a Missouri State Highway Department survey. Highway 61 averaged 2169 vehicles daily from 1939 to 1940, up 23 percent since 1936, the top increase among 11 major routes. Highway 60 averaged 844, up 22 percent, second only to the leading gain.
