Oran Man Killed in Wreck
Welda Trost 23 son of Mr and Mrs Henry Trost of Oran was killed Saturday night Sept 28 when his car collided with a motor truck on Highway 25 a mile south of Chaffee. Bryan Jolly 22 of Oran was injured and sent to St Francis Cape Girardeau. Geneva Howell of Chaffee was slightly hurt. Truck driver Bud Huffman 28 of Randles and his companion J R Smith of Oran escaped serious injury. Trost youngest son of the family, worked at a service station in Oran. Funeral services were held at the family home and interment in Friend cemetery.

W. L. DeWitt, a Big Opening area farmer, was injured Monday when a shotgun fired down a pump backfired. The blast peppered him with 42 pellets, mainly hitting the right hand and chest. He was treated at Dr. H. M. Kendig’s office.

Two Killed in Sunday Crash Near Sikeston
Edward Hensley 34 of Dexter and Sol W Johnson 57 of Paxico died after a three-vehicle collision on Highway 60 two miles west of Sikeston at 7:45 PM Sunday September 29. Eugene Allen 21 of Paxico, his passengers, and B L Beck 57 of Sikeston were injured. Allen’s truck carried passengers from Tennessee and the Sikeston truck held hogs.

Funeral services for Mrs. Jane Walker 27 were held at Lair Nunnellee Chapel Charleston with Rev J C Montgomery officiating. Interment was in Odd Fellows Cemetery Charleston. She died after swallowing Lysol at 4 PM Monday, attempted antidote milk, and could not be revived. Coroner ruled self inflicted poisoning. She was daughter of Charles E Kirkpatrick and sister to Ella Kirkpatrick and Mrs Clarence Edwards. Survived by husband Marshall Walker and father.

Life Sentence For Alva Steck In Benton Murder Case
Alva Steck, 52, was given a life term after pleading guilty to second degree murder in the July 16 fatal shooting of Dr. A P Haw in Benton. Circuit Judge Frank Kelly imposed the maximum penalty as first degree murder was waived by the state. Steck, held since July, faced possible venue change and received custody of the case before transfer to the Jefferson City penitentiary.

Sikeston ginners say only one good ginning day so far with 53 bales on that day. The season is expected to be slow though quality matches last year and 1939 output. Picking price remains 75 cents per hundred, with cotton at 10 cents this morning. The three Sikeston gins have over 900 bales ginned to date.

Farmer Injured Bridle Try Ends in Lacerated Lip
Avis Sullivan, farmer north of Sikeston, was badly hurt yesterday when he tried to bridle a young mule. The mule reared and threw him against a manger, splitting his upper lip and requiring 12 stitches. He also loosened two upper teeth and suffered bruises to the body.
