Start Community Chest Third Year Activities
The Red Feather board will soon begin soliciting funds for the Community Chest next year. Since adopting the unified Chest method Sikeston’s donations have been more equitably distributed, with 95 percent or full quotas met for each cause. Last year Delta Community Hospital received 14,200 dollars, Boy Scouts 4,180, Girl Scouts 4,180, Salvation Army 950, Children Home Society 380, with smaller grants to several national and local groups. A total budget of 30,000 dollars is planned for twelve causes, including American Red Cross and local welfare services. Reverend W. T. Bill Elkins of Wortland, Kentucky, evangelist in the Church of the Nazarene, will preach October 7–19 at Likeston Nazarene Church, with services at 7:30 p.m. Sundays and 10:45 a.m. Please attend. The following board members will direct Chest affairs next year: C. L. Blanton Jr, Kendall Sikes, Lonnie Standley, A. M. Jackson, Edward Matthews, John Sikes, J. E. Harper, Kenneth Layton, Garwood Sharp, Joseph A. Leslie, David Blanton, Val Snarp, Wm. J. Keith, Leroy Leslie, Edward Allard. Clint H. Denman will handle publicity and inform the public via newspapers and radio.

Car Accidents Fatal For Two in Southeast Missouri Weekend
A string of highway crashes in Southeast Missouri left two dead and 17 injured, with property damage in the thousands. Among the fatalities were Paul Columbus Nicholson, 48, of Fisk, struck on Highway 60 east of Poplar Bluff, and Mrs. Etta Treece, 49, of Portageville, who died when her Ford collided near the Routes T and E junction. Several others, including John Huff, 28, and James Elmer Sheets, 19, suffered serious injuries in separate crashes involving a Texas Freight transport near Neaville. State Troopers investigated across multiple sites, with officers noting a dematched transport overturned at a bridge.

About 150 people attended the dedication of St. Pauls Episcopal Church in a ceremony led by Right Rev Arthur Lichtenberger bishop co adjutor of the Episcopal Diocese of Missouri Rev John C Tierney rector of Christ Church Cape Girardeau and Sikeston church minister in charge. The bishop symbolically asked to be admitted at the outside door after the congregation gathered and was admitted by Kenneth Smitten warden and builder representative. A brief Litany followed.

Sikeston School Board approved a 57309 contract with R Clinton Construction of Sikeston for Lincoln School addition. Six bids were submitted. work starts immediately. Architect Paul Buckmueller’s plans show a 54 by 78 foot cafeteria gymnasium with a foldable setup, a 30 foot stage, lockers, showers, a kitchen, two primary rooms with separate entrances, and grade-specific sealing. A Sikeston High School addition action is targeted by November 1.

VFW Announces Annual Membership Drive
At the regular VFW meeting last night the post decided to run the annual membership drive from now until January 1.
