Southeast Missouri district tavern operators clash as the Gables, a $5000 two story frame gambling and drinking resort two miles south of town on Highway 61, is wrecked by wind flourished flames after a fire bomb reportedly struck Sunday night. Spectators fill the scene in cold, wet weather while the building and furnishings are destroyed.
Lyman Gross released from Sikeston General Hospital after treatment for a broken bone near the ankle sustained when he stepped into an abandoned excavation behind the Gables during last Friday night’s fire. His leg is in a cast.
Fire swept through the Mayfair at the junction of Highways 61 and 62 near New Madrid, a former dairy barn converted to a tavern and later shuttered by liquor‑law violations. caretaker John Valentines, nearby in a cabin, reported flames rising from the north end and engulfing the building within minutes, with power off since late October and a two hour blaze consuming the structure.
Mrs. A. E. O'Hara returns to Sikeston after visiting her mother Mrs. George Faust and other relatives in Charlestown for several days.
Five Scott county registrants, the first of the county's quota of 141 men to be inducted into the United States Army before June 30 as part of the country's initial draft of 800,000 men for compulsory military training in the five-year prepaidness measure now under way, left Benton today for Jefferson Barracks, Mo. These men, all volunteers, are among the 437 future trainees who are answering the first State call. They left Benton at 1:15 this afternoon and will travel via Greyhound bus, reporting for duty tomorrow morning.
Capt Wade Shankle of Missouri National Guard announced a Sikeston Home Guard meeting at the armory next Tuesday night December 3 at 8 o clock to boost membership to 23 required for official status. He or Col Harry Dudley will preside with present members Loomis Mayfield Harry Kirk Bur Heath Lewis Langley Ezra Williams Leonard Matthews Charles Pinnell listed among attendees.
Gov. Lloyd C. Stark issues executive orders ordering the 128th Field Artillery National Guard to a year of active service. Members reported to armories Monday under Lieut. Col. Charles T. Barkshire of Columbia. The unit was included in the Washington call issued August 27, but duty orders must come from the governor.
Sikeston markets list Wheat No 2 per bu and corn No 2 white per bu at 63c and yellow at 53c. Snap corn 50c. Hens per lb and fryers per lb shown as 12 and 13? Old roosters 6c. Ducks and young turkeys priced, with illegible lettering.
State Highway Patrol announces annual winter service to motorists providing highway and weather updates for Missouri and nearby states. Regular KHPE broadcasts from Poplar Bluff at 10 am and 4 pm offer driving conditions and statewide changes. Call Trooper or use 1700 kilocycles radio to receive information.
The past week peaked at 66 degrees last Friday while the low this morning reached 21 degrees. Frost covered roofs and homes on a cold morning. Weekly rainfall totaled 2.96 inches. The Weather Man expects fair skies and warmer conditions for the weekend.
Chas H. Butler was elected the new district chairman for the coming year at the Sikeston Boy Scout district annual meeting held at Palace Cafe with 69 scouters present. Retiring president J B Robinson presided as Dan Blount urged youth leadership and district reports showed growth in scouts and troops since 1939.

Attorneys of the twenty eighth judicial circuit Mississippi Scott and Cape Girardeau counties will honor Judge Frank Kelly Monday afternoon in the Jackson courtroom. It will be his last day presiding over circuit court in Cape Girardeau county with Senator J C McDowell of Charleston to succeed him by year end. Committee chair B C Hardesly Cape Girardeau named A M Spradling R B Oliver and James A Finch to organize the program.
Decorations for the Sikeston streets to arrive soon and be hung across intersections and on light posts. The Sikeston Chamber of Commerce and Junior Chamber cooperate, funded by local firms, with Superintendent Charles Moose directing placement.
Twelve named men registered with Company K as a form of National Guard reserve. Draft age soldiers will be inducted with Company K when mobilized for encampment next month. Names listed: Barnes Boatner Ederle Hart Henshaw Jones Jones Hicks Knight Rhodes Keasler Malone. Company K now has 78 enlisted men and four officers. losses will be filled from this group.
A list of newborns from Sikeston and surrounding areas with birth dates in late November. Families include Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Crowe, Robert Lewis, James Johnson, Lester Wallace, Ernest Gillean, Amon Wagley, John Thompson, Owens of Crowder, and Melvin Marsley. One child born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Marsley. mother formerly Mildred Carter of Sikeston.
Only a few bales added to the four thousand ginned last week as bad weather persists. Local ginners report about 45 percent of cotton remains in fields. Prices stand at 9 cents per pound for cotton and 7 ac per pound for snaps, with cotton seed at $22 per ton. Census shows 10,814 bales ginned in Scott county for the 1940 crop before Nov 11, versus 18,113 for 1939.
Mrs L R Burns entertained with an afternoon party on Wednesday at her Moore avenue home where about thirty guests attended.
Missour Institute of Aeronautics plans to expand to 324 cadets with two new dormitories, enabling 120 cadets per intake and staggered five week cycles. Work starts on a fourth dormitory footings while a fifth is prepared, with third barracks and hangar under rapid progress and completion targeted for December 20.
