St Louis Pilot’s Korea Flights See Routine Despite War
St Louisan John C. Denman, 38, longtime Northwestern Airlines pilot, describes flying to Korea as routine. On three month leave with wife and 17 year old son, he previously flew the last Shanghai commercial flight before Communists and the first into Korea after the war began. Denman, son of a Sikeston publisher, has spent five years in Japan and has been loaned to the United Nations to fly observers in Korea. He estimates monthly Korea routes include at least one flight to Pusan, plus Hong Kong, Formosa, and Manila, with regular air freight traffic. He praises Japan and its people and notes no imminent Communist threat unless economic woes rise.

Laying New Oil on U S 60 and Nearby Routes
A State Highway crew will repair U S 60 west of Poplar Bluff by applying road oil to windrowed aggregate, mixing it with motor graders, and spreading a new oil mat over the surface. The five miles of net surface will take about three weeks of favorable weather, with scattered sections from the Carter county line east to Cane Creek. Afterward, work will extend to U S 62 in Dunklin county, Route A in Pemiscot, and Route J in Scott, using oil and sand mats. Travelers are advised to avoid these sections when possible and to follow warning signs and drive carefully.

Estes Bridge in Korea Dedicated to CPL Felix Estes
A 93 foot steel and concrete bridge in Korea has been made a permanent memorial to CPL Felix J. Estes of Portageville. Estes was killed in a rockslide last February while serving with X Corps Company B, 79th Engineer Construction Battalion. The bridge, built jointly by U S soldiers and South Korean laborers, spans a tributary of the Soyang River and speeds traffic on a main supply route. Col Emil Eirlinks opened the bridge and said Estes’ loss was deeply felt by his unit. Estes is survived by his wife, a stepson, a step daughter, his mother, five brothers and one sister.
