Sikeston reports a thriving building program with more houses under construction and nearing completion than ever before, many modern brick tile and frame homes. The outlook for 1936 is extensive, with substantial repair and remodeling activity already underway and more projects planned.
Workmen finished the new five room frame dwelling of C. C. Wilkinson on North Park this week. The residence includes a bath and full basement and sits on a large lot at the far end of North Park.
John Fisher owns a seven room stucco house on North Kings Highway expected to be completed this week. Fisher plans to move in within two weeks. W. W. Hughes served as contractor on the job.
John Bollinger of Benton began construction this week of a two story brick veneer house for A W Swacker. The home will include two baths and a full basement and sits on the northeast corner of Park and Hunter streets.
A two story stucco house owned by J E Robinson and under construction for three months nears completion as workers finish the roof. Built by W L Hughes the structure features an exterior stucco finish.
Workmen plaster interior walls and apply exterior stucco to the tile structure house on North Kingshighway owned by Billy Keith. Built by W. L. Hughes, the residence is expected to be occupied within two weeks.
Work advances on the two story residence of Chas Boyce on North Ranney street with windows and doors installed this week. Plastering of rooms finished early this week and contractor J A Sutterfield says occupancy is expected in a few weeks.
The combined house and store of Billy Walker on Moore Avenue is near completion with the frame facing east. He expects to open the store by next week.
The six room frame house owned by Ed Smith on Matthews Avenue is nearing completion with workmen finishing the front porch this week. The structure includes a full basement and two baths, with Cr H Warrison serving as contractor.
The frame house of Miss Ruth McCoy on Park avenue will be finished within thirty days, says contractor J. A. Sutterfield. This week the roof was completed and brown shingles will be placed on the sides. Plastering is to be completed next week.
In a few days W. W. Lankford will commence work on a seven room house on Ruth street featuring two baths and hollow tile construction. Hollister and Boyer are the contractors for the project.
Within thirty days Ray Wedel will move into a six room frame house on Sikes avenue that is described as modern throughout. This week workmen plastered interior walls under contract by George Staple who is overseeing the project.
Plastering of the interior walls on the six room stucco house owned by Pleas Malcolm was completed. The residence on North Ranney Street faces west and is expected to be ready for occupancy by the latter part of June.
Miss Alma Donaldson is having a five room frame house finished this month. Part of the lumber was taken from another house in Illinois. The house has a half basement and is located on East Lake street in the Williams addition.
T A Slack has been remodeling a frame one story house on the northeast corner of Lake and North Prairie streets over the past week and expects to finish soon. The main change is a new front appearance.
The Lair Mathingly Service Station installed a new drive this week on Center and North Kingshighway. The new drive starts on the east side of the station with two gasoline pumps added on the east drive.
Lynn Waggener began remodeling the Moore avenue and Tanner street store front last week. The new frame front will be completed by week’s end and features a slanting roof over the entrance.
Jack Doughty a 17 year old son of Sikeston barber Jess Doughty won 350 dollars plus costs in circuit court in Jackson. Dug Graham a Sikeston stock buyer was found liable for injuring Doughty with his Ford truck on December 17 1935 at the corner of Kingshighway and Malone avenue, breaking his right leg.
Republican leaders of the Tenth District, led by Cape Girardeau chairman Rush Limbaugh, summon Republicans to a 1:30 PM May 26 meeting at the Rex Theatre Sikeston. A National Committee rep explains the Republican Volunteer Movement, first in a statewide district series.
Roy C. Marsh and A. C. Molier, both of St. Louis, were arrested for violating Sikeston city ordinance 1323 the wheel tax on out of town produce firms. Marsh was fined 25 dollars plus costs and filed an appeal to the Scott county circuit court claiming the ordinance is void. Roger A. Bailey and City Attorney Robert A. Dempster appeared for the defense and city respectively. the case is slated for the August term.
Sikeston voters approved a 15 000 bond issue to fund a new eight room grade school building with heat lockers and toilets. Bids will be received next Monday. Lloyd A Blanchard of the National Safety Council will address the Southeast Missouri Safety Council in Sikeston Monday night and will join Kemper Bruton in Cape Girardeau Tuesday for meetings promoting safety initiatives and the National Safety Traffic Contest.
A contract with L. T. Berthe of Charleston designates him engineer for Sikeston storm sewer works with WPA funds. Project No 1 estimates $26,000 federal aid and $12,000 city match, routing from Franklin and Lewellen to Highway 61 with branches to Malone Park and North New Madrid Street. Council met to review plans. 37 taxpayers petition Woodlawn avenue opening, referred to committee.
This week saw a high of 87 degrees on Sunday May 17 and a low of 54 on Tuesday night May 19. The forecast calls for fair and warmer weather with a chance of scattered showers across the district in the coming days.
W. L. Haters came home Wednesday night from Columbia where he had attended the Knights Templar meeting and activities.
Major C. L. Malone on Monday completed an agreement with other Malone family members making him the sole owner of the drug store property on Malone avenue. Shares inherited by other relatives were all bought by Major Malone.
A daughter was born to Mr and Mrs J S Holmes at their William street home on Wednesday May 20. Another daughter was born to Mr and Mrs Cecil Whitesides near Bertrand on Sunday May 17.
W. E. Hollingsworth, president, urged all members to attend the meeting at Hotel Del Rey on Tuesday night May 26. The agenda includes plans to increase membership and to establish a regular monthly meeting schedule going forward.
Southeast Missouri Press Association outlines tentative program for the annual meeting to be held Friday June 19 in Jackson. Registration 8 to 9 30 a shop talk program then an afternoon session 1 30 to 4 banquet at 7. Officers listed include C L Blanton Jr president Joe Freudenberger vice president Alden Pinney recording secretary and Ruben R Schade corresponding secretary. Counties in the association are Jefferson Washington St Francois Ste Genevieve Perry Iron Madison Bollinger Cape Girardeau Scott Mississippi New Madrid Stoddard Pemiscot Dunklin Butler Wayne Ripley.
A group of women in Sikeston plans to organize a Parent Teachers Association within the next weeks. Mrs. Warren Mabrey of Cape Girardeau, president of the state association, is to visit Sikeston in two weeks to assist. The meeting will be at Mrs. Ralph Anderson's home.
The Sikeston American Legion under M. E. Montgomery will sponsor a memorial for World War veterans at 2:00 PM on Sunday May 31. The Drum and Bugle Corps will meet at Malone Park and march to the cemeteries with Sikeston residents joining the tribute. The Sikeston high school band will also participate in the parade. A brief program will be held at the cemetery followed by grave decorations. Legion members will privately decorate veterans graves early Sunday morning. The full cemetery program will be announced next week.
The high school band will practice next Thursday morning at 9 o'clock in the school gymnasium. The session serves as a preliminary rehearsal ahead of Memorial Day services held the following Sunday.
Work on the Highway 55 overpass at the Cotton Belt Railroad north of Chaffee progresses rapidly. Concrete piers are finished and one span of the bridge deck is in place. The project provides work for many in the district with seven trucks a Diesel excavator and O'Dell Construction Company of Hannibal Missouri in charge.
The Sikeston High School baccalaureate at the gymnasium featured Rev. C. F. Transue of Sikeston Church of the Nazarene delivering an elevating sermon on "The Investment of Personal Resources." He urged investment of personal talents through Bible guidance, calling the Bible the mind of God and traveler's map, while the senior class and audience sang "Lead On O King Eternal" and heard multiple musical numbers by the high school orchestra, choir, and Boys' Glee Club.
Superintendent Roy V. Ellise announced school awards Monday night. Betty Belle Donnell and Clay Mitchell tied for highest four year averages and received scholarships to William Wood College and State College Cape Girardeau respectively. Esther Duncan earned a Draughon's College scholarship.
Seventy graduates, 36 girls and 34 boys, received diplomas at a gymnasium ceremony in Sikeston Monday night. Dean West C. Myers of State College at Cape Girardeau delivered the address "When Is a Man Educated?" and emphasized education beyond classroom knowledge. Principal Wm. E. Mahew announced the class and the diplomas were handed by Lee Bowman, with musical numbers by the orchestra and Girls' Glee Club enhancing the program.
