More than 500 people reported seeing a vision of Christ on the cross in the skies over Ipswich during an air raid alert on April 27. Some witnesses saw only the cross while others described a bowed head and crossed feet. The vicar, Rev. Harold Green, called it a good omen.
The Butler County Selective Service Board postponed pre induction and induction for men over 26 after a telegram from Col. Claude Earp. State officials said new instructions would follow after the Washington conference. Missouri headquarter guidance limited May draft calls to under 26, volunteers, and over 26 in essential war related jobs.
Missouri Democrats met in Jefferson City and chose 12 at large delegates plus 20 district delegates for Chicago. Senators Truman and Clark led the convention which backed Roosevelt for a fourth term and named new national committee members and presidential electors.
E P Coleman Jr attends Missouri War Chest meeting at the Missouri Athletic Club in St Louis. The group plans state campaign units and county quotas for the drive. The forthcoming campaign will include National War Fund agencies such as USO War Prisoners Aid United China Relief and Russian War Relief.
Home grown berries from C. H. Butler were harvested on a three acre field near Miner and marketed earlier this week bringing fresh fruit to the local market.
Governor Forrest C Donnell proclaims May 11 to 17 as WAC Recruiting Week in Missouri to recruit volunteers for all Army branches. The drive, sponsored by the War Activities Committee of the Motion Picture Industry at the War Department’s request, uses Missouri theatres and local civic groups to meet quotas and place new recruits in desired posts.
Lee Bowman secretary and sales manager of Scott County Milling Company and board member attended the National Millers Association meeting in Chicago with Murray Phillips. Congressman Hope of Kansas spoke. 254 millers attended. Soft wheat varieties Clarkan Mussouri Early Premium and Fultz were favored for cake pastry flour. semi hard types were disliked. Bowman and Phillips returned home Saturday.
Sikeston trained Captain Robert Johnson of Class 42 F at Missouri Institute of Aeronautics becomes a World War II ace by downing two German planes over Europe. From Lawton Oklahoma, he started flying at 14, soloed after six and a half hours, and built 1000 flight hours in combat. He earned the Purple Heart Air Medal eight DFCs and a Silver Star, crediting wingman Lieut. Harold E. Hartney for the successful mission.
A cap left in Gene Buckles's wrecked sedan, stolen from Kathleen Street, may identify the thief. Troopers found the car in a Catron ditch after a high speed slide. The thief fled on foot after breaking a window, abandoning a tac driver's cap in the vehicle.
Managers of the softball program met at Gene Buckles home last Friday to set rules for the summer league. Ten teams will compete this year, up from eight, with games starting May 30 on the high school field. AL entries include International Shoe Factory and Aviation cadets. NL entries include State Polee and MTA instructors.

Scott County's quota for the Fifth War Loan Drive is $663,000, announced by county chairman Jas. S. Kevil. The amount is $3,000 above the January Fourth Drive, reflecting flood-related reductions from an original county total of $737,000. The drive begins June 12 with house-to-house solicitations, overseen by Supt. R. A. Harper for Sikeston, aligned with the national slogan Back the attack buy more than before.
Sikeston chamber votes to move monthly meetings from Tuesday to Monday to boost attendance at dinner sessions. Dr True Taylor of Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau speaks on postwar economics and disarmament gradualism. The Sikeston District Scouts with five troops from Sikeston and one each at Miner Switch Matthews Canalou Morehouse Benton Morley will hold their district camporee at Benton Friday and Saturday May 12 13. Troops will pitch camp at 4 pm Friday and feature camp craft scout craft and camp fire stunts with each troop supplying its own meals. Scouts from Sikeston include Troop 60 Troop 1 Troop 42 Troop 43 and Troop 44 with sponsors Baptist Kiwanis Junior Chamber Lions and Presbyterian churches and scoutmasters Hutcheson Klama Schumacher Elder Gimlin.
The painters union, the Odd Fellows lodge and a non union painter reached an agreement ending days of picketing. A union painter will take over the interior contract with lodge consent and a small price increase will be paid. Representatives from four civic groups including the Senior and Junior Chamber of Commerce Kiwanis and Lions form the Teen Age Recreation Committee and will meet May 15 at 7 30 PM in M L Stewarts office at the high school to organize. J W Bryan secretary will contact local clubs and lodges to send reps for a governing body to plan a recreation program for Sikeston teens. J B Harper chairs the meeting and will preside.
