Sikeston High to honor 1936 graduating class with address
The 1936 Sikeston High School commencement will be delivered by Dean West C Myers of State College in Cape Girardeau on May 18 at the high school auditorium. Diplomas will be presented to 70 graduates by Board of Education chairman Lee Bowman. The program features music by the high school orchestra directed by Reid Jann and a baccalaureate sermon on May 17 by Rev C F Transue of the Church of the Nazarene. The list includes Audrey Allen, Juanita Bandy, Tom Baker III, Lyle Bird, Judson Boardman, Ruth Bloomfield, and many others.

Superintendent Roy V. Ellise announced the annual enumeration completed by National Youth Administration workers shows 1890 school age children in Sikeston, 1675 white and 215 colored, up 152 from last year. Total enrollment is 1675 white and 215 colored, with 338 high school pupils. enrollment trends rise each year.

Third Time Sikeston Wins Drama Contest in Southeast Missouri

The Sikeston softball season opened Monday on the high school field under Athletic Chairman Robert Dempster with Mayor Fuchs delivering the first pitch. About 200 men from twelve businesses are playing, and crowds grew for the two games featuring the National Guard, Peters Shoe, International Shoe, and Agoga Class of the Baptist church. Tonight Sikes Hardware meets WPA, followed by Kiwanis Club and American Legion play.

May Day Festival Crown Gives Sikeston Queen
Miss Betty Fisher daughter of Mr and Mrs D L Fisher was crowned Queen of the May at Sikeston public schools festival on the high school field Friday night May 1. Attendants and escorts were chosen by student vote and include Nancy Ann Ponder and others. Crownbearer Gene Hayden and flower girls Jane Wilkinson Patsy Ellise led a pageant with nearly all grade school children in dances songs and games from Scotland Japan Holland Poland Ireland Sweden England and America. About 2500 spectators called it one of the most beautiful events here.

De mented Man Is Released From Jail
William Gene a 32 year old escaped inmate from a Mississippi state hospital for the insane at Meridian was held briefly in the city jail after capture by Highway Patrolmen. He was found hitchhiking near Sikeston and arrested on suspicion. Mississippi authorities were notified. they declined to send for him, possibly due to money shortages.

New Jail To Be Built This Year In Scott County
Presidential approval and federal funds for Scott county's new jail have been received. Construction begins at Benton early this summer with total project cost of 25,084 dollars, including 515 dollars county sponsor funds. The one story brick structure measures 87 by 49 feet and features 12 four-inmate bunks, two showers, a detention room and a hospital ward, with a secure cell layout, ventilated corridors, and heavy billet steel bars. Architect John J. Miller of Time outlines plans for a secure, well vented facility with a single outside door and a final outer corridor.

Fire damages Bertrand business district in morning blaze
A morning fire in Bertrand damaged the post office building and several shops including Jones Restaurant Tim Elliott’s shoe shop and the Collins store. Two nearby residences owned by Richard Barr and Mrs Adgeist were destroyed. Firemen from Charleston battled high winds to halt further spread. The Scott County Milling elevator fire was put out quickly with minor damage and windows broke at Wm Kendall Grocery.
