The World This Week reports the FBI completed about two million loyalty checks, resulting in 571 investigations and 133 resignations from federal government positions. The roundup notes broader federal actions and political implications across the national scene.
Senator L D Joslyn of Charleston was the guest speaker at the Sikeston Lions Club meeting at the Dunn Hotel yesterday at noon. President Herb Walton presided with 32 members present. Plans were made for a Memorial Day dance on May 29 at the Armory.
A city wide rat control drive orders 500 pounds of poison and begins distributing through business and residential blocks. Scott County Agent Tom B Stroup reports poison receipts expected Monday with a second shipment planned after final canvass. Over 50 trucks to aid cleanup follow distribution to speed city sanitation.
Eugene Bell, 35, a former inmate of State Hospital at Farmington, is charged with the fatal shooting of Douglas Ringo, 38, in Wolf Island, Mississippi County. Ringo, a prominent farmer, was driving a truck when Bell allegedly forced the truck off the road and shot him. Ringo died in a Cairo hospital. Bell is held without bond in the Mississippi County jail at Charleston.
At a Veterans of Foreign Wars meeting plans were laid to light the V F W Memorial Stadium for night baseball and softball. A committee will secure lighting material and work will start when material arrives in the next days. Also discussed were plans for the July 4 picnic and a V F W baseball trip to Dyersburg Tennessee next Sunday with transportation needed for players.
Missouri highway officials approved bids totaling about 1.15 million dollars for 32.7 miles of road work across 19 projects in 10 counties. Projects include U S Route 66 in Rolla and U S Route 71 in Maryville. bids were not received for sections in Dunklin Pemiscot and New Madrid counties. Krehbiel Stalker Construction Co of Columbia won two Mississippi county projects for 48701 dollars.
Mr and Mrs Thomas J Evans of Blodgett celebrated their golden wedding anniversary marking March 31 1898 marriage in Bloomfield Their family of thirteen includes children in Blodgett St Louis Dayton Medford Senath Bloomfield Miner and others with 39 grandchildren and great grandchildren Two sons served in World War I both active in the local Methodist church and in good health at home
Josephine Chandler a 17 year old Sikeston resident and Albert Chandler's daughter won first in Division II of the 14th district American Legion Auxiliary essay contest for her piece on Americanism. Charles Matthews 15 won state level Division II first place last week. Awards totaled 10 and 5 dollars for first and second in each division.
W A Myers will attend the semi annual meeting of the Missouri Association of Life Underwriters Friday and Saturday in Jefferson City. Others from the district include S C Abernathy of Caruthersville, president of the Southeast Missouri district group, and Raymond C Camp of Poplar Bluff, secretary.
City council approved the Sikeston real estate equalization after a 5 to 2 vote, cutting the proposed increase from 1,247,068 to 935,301. The revised assessment rises from 2,091,980 to 3,027,281, with further appeals possible through the County Board of Appeals in Benton.
The Cancer Society annual drive for funds will be officially completed tomorrow with indications that half the $2008 goal will be met. Mrs Bertie Felker, chairman, reported today receipts from Sikeston total $860 with more solicitation planned. Also to be reported are Benton receipts. A Saturday tally will sum coin containers in the local business district. The drive covered Scott county but was limited to Benton and the Sikeston area this year.
The week recorded a high of 83 degrees last Saturday morning and 81 degrees Sunday with most days in the 70s. The low reached 45 degrees last Friday and yesterday morning, and rainfall totaled .55 inches. Tomorrow’s forecast calls for continued cloudiness and light showers.
Campaign leaders report Scott county donors have raised 6759.60 toward a 7140 quota for the Red Cross relief drive. North end chair Allan Hubbard lists groups from Hunter to Fernfelt totaling 2905.25, south end chair Earl Jarvis reports 622.25 plus Sikeston city 1940.10 and advances 2101.60. Some communities have not yet reported and officials urge complete totals. W. A. Myers is general chair for Scott county.
Reverend K E B Crump representing the Baptist Ministerial Alliance asked the Sikeston city council for added police protection in Sunset Addition after a fatal shooting. The request was referred to the police committee for consideration.
The State Highway Department in Sikeston announced the Tiptonville Ferry east of Portageville is now in operation restoring river crossing service.
Ten Poplar Bluff county Republican party members face alleged vote fraud charges from the November 1946 general election. A Cape Girardeau trial is slated for June 28 after dismissal of the Sikeston case earlier. Indictments named William F. Priest H. P. Bennett and George Collins Jr. as defendants amid ongoing government actions.

Federal judge Judge Hulen dismissed the vote fraud case against Sikeston Democrats Charles L. Blanton Jr. editor Grover C. Baker and N. E. Fuchs Jr after key witnesses refused to testify. Special Prosecutor Broome cited Fifth Amendment protections and the government moved for dismissal.
Henry Meldrum Post 114 will hold a regular session at the Legion Home this evening. A film titled Plan for Peace will be shown and reviewed by UMIT. The Cotton Carnival committee set tentative dates for the annual affair for Sept 23, 24 and 25 with named committee chairmen for finance, parade, program, advertising, food, concessions, and location.
