The Kansas City Monarchs face the Memphis Red Sox at Capada Park in Cape Girardeau on Saturday night at 815. Led by Jim Gilmore and a solid infield, the Monarchs boast a strong defense and experienced pitching with Whitney Cartmill and a veteran mound corps guiding the attack.
Southeast Missouri Kennel Club outlines an all breed dog show set for May 20 in the Arena Building judged by Percy Robert of Noroton Connecticut and J J Duncan of Atlanta Georgia. Roberts currently judges in Sidney Australia while Duncan has 30 years judging major shows across Canada and the United States. A junior showmanship class for ages six to sixteen will run with a Ken Lang or Ken L Ration cocker puppy as a door prize. Proceeds benefit the Poho ward of St Francis Hospital.

Charles Beaudeau, 24, of Cape Girardeau, caught his thumb in a paper folder at the Herald office. He was treated at Missouri Delta Community Hospital Tuesday and discharged.
Lawrence Oliver 45, Chaffee insurance agent, died when his northbound car sideswiped a milk truck driven by Grover Cleveland Corbin Jr. of Cape Girardeau on Highway 25 six miles south of Jackson. A separate accident nearby injured Charles Newton Mainard, 42, of Matthews, when his car veered onto a gravel driveway. Oliver, civic leader and longtime local businessman, leaves a wife Ima Catherine Kilhafer and four children, with ties to St. Ambrose church and nearby organizations. He previously ran the family insurance business since 1946 after his father’s death. Surviving siblings include siblings Lynn, Chester, and three sisters.
Teen drivers with licenses or permits and no traffic violations in six months may compete in the Sikeston Road-E-O on May 21, sponsored by the Sikeston Junior Chamber of Commerce and Southeast Missouri Insurance Agents Association. Local winners advance to statewide and national contests with prizes from plaques to cash and a $3,000 college scholarship. contest held at the airport with four State Highway Patrolmen as judges.
At 6:20 PM Tuesday fire units rushed across the street to Sikeston Paint and Wallpaper Co at 126 East Center Street where trash burning in the rear ignited a fire. Damage was slight and this marked the third fire call of the day for the department.
The Annual Spring Luncheon of the Woman's Civic Club at the Colonial Inn saw Mrs Robert Dempster accept the role of president from the retiring leader. Guests and members heard tributes, admired May pole decorations, and learned committee assignments for civic, publicity, fashion show, and theater activities while fundraising for Girl Scout support and the City Shelter House debt.
Mrs. Sarah Reed, 74, was found in a locked Essex home in a semi conscious state, believed to have suffered a heart attack last Sunday night. Neighbor Mrs. Gene Swinger alerted Reed, whose son and grandson entered through a window to assist. She was taken to a Poplar Bluff hospital and is showing some improvement. Reed had planned to move to Carmi Ill and had visited friends in Dexter recently.
A school bus carrying Negro pupils from O Bannon High School collided with a Nash Rambler at Highway 61 and Noxall Road. The bus left the road, struck a post, injuring 18 year old Virginia Papil who was treated and dismissed. Bus driver B F Graham was shaken and planned hospital check. Driver of Nash Rambler uninjured.
Fire on Lincoln and Jaycee Streets in Clayton Addition wipes out all possessions of the Shelby Barnett family. Barnett escaped in pajamas. Mrs Barnett and four children left with only the clothes on their backs. Mrs Jewell Allen asks for furniture clothing or household necessities and offers pickup and delivery to the Barnetts at contact numbers 129 or 38.
April welfare report from Ruth B Scott shows a slight decline in applications across categories. The month logged 37 public assistance, 15 old age, 12 aid to dependent children, four general relief, five permanent total disability, and one aid to the blind. Total child welfare services reached 37, with 22 in homes or semi secure settings. State and federal funds paid out totaled 87,956 across old age, aid to dependent children, general relief, disability, and blind pensions for 2,706 cases and 704 children in 265 families.
Doniphan Missouri voters finally decided the mayoral race after a delayed election. In April 5 balloting John V Ditte and incumbent Henry Bell each received 268 votes, the council deadlocked 2 to 2. In a special election Tuesday Ditto won 437 to 344, defeating Bell as turnout nearly doubled April.
John Wesley Hales 79, a Spanish American War veteran, died at 5:45 AM at his home in East Prairie. Born April 29, 1876 in Rockdale Texas, he worked as a road building extractor and taxi owner and lived in East Prairie 26 years. He returned recently from a Memphis Tennessee veterans hospital. Survived by wife Minnie Mae Hales and stepson William C Hale of St Louis. Funeral at 2 PM Thursday at Shelby Funeral Chapel with Rev Melvin Bryant. burial in WOW Cemeteries.
The Scott County Junior Chamber of Commerce unanimously backed a plan to help buy an X ray adapter for Mussouri Delta Community Hospital at a lower cost. They pledged 100 dollars toward the 1800 needed as Scott County's share of 3500 total to purchase the device.
The Kiwanis Club met at the Colonial Inn to view The Smallest Foe about virus research. President Everett Farmer announced a joint meeting with civic groups at the high school cafeteria on Monday as part of Boys and Girls Week.
Chief of Police Harold Wallace issued a last warning to residents who have not bought the city auto sticker. A campaign to collect licenses is underway and summonses will be issued for those lacking them. Those who bought stickers are urged to display them clearly in windshields.
The Regular Council met largely online to address health concerns over frost proof toilets and to review traffic issues. New aldermen Everett Farmer and W H Simmons heard objections to a Harris Street parking ban while a traffic committee report promised statewide repercussions. The council approved asphalt paving petitions, a concrete street bid, and a full time city engineer, while licenses and department bills were approved.
