Share-Cropper’s Death After Family Quarrel in Canalou
Wheeler Sutton a 30 year old share-cropper in Canalou died early Wednesday from knife wounds after a quarrel at the breakfast table with his wife. German Pepper, brother in law, intervened and Sutton struck him with an axhandle. Pepper then slashed Sutton with a pocket knife. Sutton died three hours later in a New Madrid doctor’s office. Pepper is jailed in New Madrid. The family recently moved to farm land owned by Harley Barnes.

Two New Buildings Occupied This Week
Icy Arthurs Barber Shop on Highway 61 moved to a new building by Lyman Gross on Greer avenue. Ike Parks and Orville Alsperman operate the shop. A new service-department building for Kellys Simpson Oil Station at Highways 60 and 61 is now in use, enabling greasing and washing without hindering other station work. Death of Scott County Sheriff Wade G. Anderson
Wade Gray Anderson, 61, longtime Scott county sheriff and Southeast Missouri family member, died at Southeast Missouri Hospital Cape Girardeau after a weeklong pneumonia illness. Funeral was held in Commerce with interment at Commerce cemetery. He directed the new Scott county jail project and was a mule and horse expert with connections to the Cape Girardeau Horse and Mule Commission Company. He left a widow Pauline Maupin and brothers Tillman and Norval, with a sister Mrs. J B Stubblefield.

County Court To Choose New Sheriff
The Scott county court will meet Tuesday April 5 to select a successor to the late Sheriff Wade Anderson. The appointee will serve until the fall election. Possible candidates include Mrs. Anderson widow of the deceased and John Hobbs of Chaffee who lost to Anderson two years ago. J F Nunnelee of Blodgett, coroner, was sworn in to act as sheriff. Three deputy sheriffs under Anderson were sworn in as aides to Nunnelee. The weather column notes a March dominated by lambs with a lamb outpacing a lion, temperatures from 43 to 80 degrees and 7.37 inches of rain in the past week.

Sikeeston Child to Undergo Major Operation
Violet Chaney two weeks old daughter of Mr and Mrs Russell Chaney of North Handy Street was taken by Albritton ambulance to St Marys Hospital St Louis. The child will undergo a major operation to correct a split spine with dangerous risks and slight chances for recovery according to doctors.

District Roads Closed by High Waters
The State Highway Department reports Route 53 closed at midnight with 22 inches of water and rising two inches hourly. Route 60 east of Poplar Bluff has three inches of water and rising one inch per hour and may close tonight. Route 60 Ash Hull to first ditch east of Poplar Bluff has one to three inches of surface water over the slab with traffic moving through. Route 14 in Butler county east of Harviell remains closed with 36 inches of water rising one inch per hour. Routes H and B in Butler county closed with 18 inches of water rising quickly. Route A in Wayne county remains closed with six inches of water. Black River fell one foot last night at Williamsville, now rising six inches per hour.

Torrential rain flooded Sikeston streets early Wednesday, producing an absentee list at Sikeston Public Schools totaling more than a hundred, according to Supt. R A Harper. Some pupils arrived soaked and were sent home. others trudged long distances through water to attend classes.

Tragic Tornado Slams Neelyville. Six Dead, Dozens Hurt
A tornado swept northeast through Neelyville near Poplar Bluff last night, killing six and injuring about 140. Homes and the Clay County Cotton Gin were leveled, with $25,000 in damage. Victims include Violet Cornelius 15, Mrs. John McCormack, and Ed Stewart 55. Two more deaths unconfirmed. Injured were rushed to Poplar Bluff hospitals. The storm crossed into New Madrid county, damaging farm buildings and injuring one seriously. Neelyville, population 250, was nearly wiped out. many houses destroyed and a baby found dead in a ditch amid wreckage. Residents began relief and salvage efforts today.

Negro Killed Near Crowder in Missouri Storm
Wille Lee Roberts, 15 year old Negro, died last night when a storm wrecked the Carroll Plantation farmhouse near Crowder. The Roberts family suffered a loss as other houses on the plantation were demolished and Sikeston endured heavy rains and flooding across the Southeast Missouri district with widespread wind damage.
