The World This Week reports Allied reinforcements at Anzio and heavy raids on Milan Turin and Bolzano, U S bombers and RAF missions, Japanese incursions toward Imphal and Kohima, Finnish and Bulgarian moves, aerial strikes on the Marshalls, and a Missouri vote story with Oklahoma results.
A farmer from Gould Arkansas sought McMullin Estate hybrid seed corn and addressed an order to Missouri Hybrid Seed Corn No 8 Sikeston Missouri. The letter reached the McMullin Estate office in the McCoy Tanner Building, clarifying the company name and delivery path.
Judgment for 708 dollars against the Mitchell Sharp Chevrolet Company was granted Ray G. Stock in Scott county circuit court at Benton last Thursday afternoon. The case stemmed from damage to Stock's car in the Mitchell Sharp garage fire two years ago. Other week’s actions included a divorce granted to Lola V. Biri from Clarence A. Biri with custody and maintenance terms. A rape trial for Charley Williams, Sikeston, will be heard after a venue change to Judge Norman Houser.
Earl Lambert known as Little Man takes over Joe Ryan’s Motel Cafe on Highway 61 south of the intersection. He promises the same fine food and service as the previous owner. Ryan operates another eating place near Poplar Bluff and will continue operating there.
Scott County Missouri selects "Big Doc Scottie" as ambulance plane name after residents invest 385445 in Series E War Bonds between November 1 1943 and January 1 1944. Plane to enter service within 30 days with nose art credit to local schoolchildren.
Scott county Republicans at Benton vote to keep their Missouri State Convention delegates uninstructed. Names named for state and Southeast Missouri District conventions include George W. Kirk C. C. Reed J. A. Cope Ralph E. Bailey W. L. Tomlinson Mrs. Charles Bertrand Mrs. Martin Krieger E R Tirmenstein J Grant Frye and others. About 40 attendees. U S Senate hopeful Charles Rendlen attended.
Advance ticket sale indicates the Sikeston Armory will be filled to capacity for the Boy Scout Circus tomorrow night. About 600 Scouts and Cubs from Sikeston, Stoddard, Cep Wale Charleston and New Madrid districts will participate, with a full program showing what Scouting can do for boys.
Four persons were injured at one o clock Saturday morning when three motor vehicles tangled on Highway 61 four miles north of Sikeston according to the State Highway Patrol. The collision involved a Chevrolet pickup driven by Will Dye of Morley on the shoulder to pick up hitchhikers, a truck driven by Ed Abernathy of Advance, and an automobile driven by Everett Watts of St. Louis Watts tried to pass Abernathy, struck him, then hit the pickup. Injured were Mrs Will Dye Everett Watts Mrs Minnie Gray of Atkins Ark and Halsie Miller of St Louis.
Frank Thomas, a Sikeston man charged with first degree murder in the Wm. E. Bone case, was released on a $1000 bond after a preliminary hearing. He has been housed in Scott County jail since the decedent was found fatally injured in his cabin on December 28. Bond signers include Rich Harrington and several others. Johnetta Robinson, once a witness, was released on $100 bond. A Pvt. Connie Carey, formerly of Camp Wallace, has been moved to Camp Reynolds, Greenville, Pa.
In Scott county the Red Cross War Fund drive shows little progress. receipts total $12,100 toward a $19,700 goal with official deadline tomorrow. A shoe factory strike in Chaffee leaving 600 workers unpaid is cited as a factor. Sikeston reports $9,254 raised toward its $8,300 quota, including $1,200 from the Missouri Institute of Aeronautics and $1,200 from a house to house canvas led by Z. B. McAmis.
Taxpayers must file 1944 estimated income tax declarations with the Collector of Internal Revenue in St. Louis by April 15. Forms were mailed to those who filed 1943 declarations. The pay as you go plan covers wages withheld and non withholding cases including clergy domestic workers farming firms and others with non withheld income. Quarterly installments are due with the filing and on June 15 September 15 and December 15, with farmers may delay until December 15 if over 80 percent of income comes from farming. Deputy collectors will assist in Ulmo April 11 and Benton April 13.
The morning dropped below freezing for the first time this week as cold winds and clouds kept temperatures down. Sunday's high reached 71 degrees, with forecasts predicting cooler conditions tomorrow and cloudy but warmer weather on the weekend per meteorologist Albert Klamm of the Missouri Institute of Aeronautics.
Next Tuesday April 4 election in Sikeston features a three way contest for police chief pitting incumbent Walter Kendall against Harold Wallace and Roy Beck. Straw poll shows Wallace far ahead of Kendall with Beck close behind. Other contests include re election bids for Ward two alderman Frank Shadoin and Ward four alderman A Wayne Bess. Ward one and Ward three incumbents Lynn Waggener and Gust Zacher run unopposed for city council. Revenue collector Joe Mathis and police judge F H Smith are unopposed. Polling places and election officials listed by ward. Board of Education terms of Lee Bowman and T A Roberts expire. no filings as of Monday deadline.
Earl M. Pixley was bound over to the July term of Scott county circuit court after waiving preliminary hearing before Justice Frank Smith on a charge of assault. The incident left Parvin Lavendar with serious injuries in a Smith Addition fight. Lavendar is a Sikeston General Hospital patient. Pixley posted a $1000 bond.
Thirty Scott county men were accepted for service in the United States Army and Navy at Jefferson Barracks this week. Names include William Foster Baker, Farryl Floyd Owen, Paul Couch, Cecil Aaron Cowger, Tris Speaker Marshall, Robert Leland Maunier, James Everett Hoover, Tommie Joe Johnson Sikeston, Charles Wagoner Germain Anthony Tenkhoff Oran, Charles Harry Ray Diehlstadt, Robert Neely Ford Lee Roy Gottman George Frank Griffin Chaffee, Robert Pleasant Findlay Joe Flint Blankenship Simo, Thomas Emmet Burke Morley Louis Edward Sanders James Lester Gaines Bobby Col Mer Commerce Charles Henry Dunger Fornfelt Navy Clyde Ulysses Fulkerson Cecil Mott William Louis Lee Edwin Lee Bagwell Phillip Laugh Milford Sikeston Herbert Renshaw Hale George Willis Forster Morley Robert Lee Radica Commerce Claude David Ludwig Tmo.
The April ration table keeps butter at 16 points per pound while lowering points for ready-to-eat meats and processed foods. Canned peas move to point free, carrots drop from five to three points, and tomato juice in six to 14 ounces drops one point. Margarine remains six points per pound and lard stays point free.
Still unsettled is the strike of shoe factory employees at Chaffee with more than 600 workers idle for the third week. An attempt will be made to bring workers, factory executives and union representatives together this weekend to restart operations.
Senator Paul C. Jones of Kennett says he will not seek re election to the Senate seat he has held since 1936. He represents the 21st district and, with his father Wm Jones, publishes the Dunklin County Democrat at Kennett. He previously served in the House for Dunklin County.
Harold Wallace remains favorite in The Herald straw vote with 90 votes, Walter Kendall 24, Roy Beck 18, Others 7, from 189 of 250 mailed ballots returned. No change among top three candidates, Chiefs Wallace Kendall and Beck.
The Southeast Missouri Sportsmen's Association of Poplar Bluff announces that due to Orville Zimmerman congressman for the district, definite action is expected soon on transferring Lake Wappapello from the War Department to the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service. The transfer proposal was decided two weeks ago after a conference with the Missouri State Conservation Commission in Sikeston.
Ralph Hutchison of Caruthersville came to Sikeston on Monday to interview businessmen and farmers about a possible Republican bid for Congress. He said he has toured several district counties and received encouragement from Republicans and Democrats, but has not yet decided whether to run.
Mrs. Harry Barnett received a cablegram last week saying her husband Tj Sgt Barnett has arrived safely overseas. He serves in the Anti Aircraft Division of the Army and was formerly stationed at Camp Stewart Georgia.
One hundred seventy four Scott county men were sent to Jefferson Barracks for physicals ahead of induction this past week. Chief clerk Norman Bugg notes no report yet on how many will be accepted, and he fears future quotas. He estimates at least 2400 Scott county men are currently in the armed services. The draft board, reduced to four members after Swacker left, reviews records of men not yet called with slim deferment chances for those under 26. The state’s farm deferment rule change, maintaining 20 units per acre, drew concern from Scott and New Madrid boards.
Beatrice Thomas, a former shoe factory employee, has taken ownership and management of the City Pig at the intersection of Highways 60 and 61. The cafe offers short orders and sandwiches of all kinds to patrons.
