Seniors Attend Vocational Guidance Sessions in Sikeston
Nine hundred ninety seniors from thirty southeast Missouri high schools gathered in Sikeston for vocational guidance hosted by the Southeast Missouri State Teachers Association. Attendees from towns including Jackson Archyrd Anniston and Bloomfield chose from seventeen discussion groups with Business Administration drawing 327, Aviation 265, and Beauty Culture 244 participants. Box lunches were sold and classrooms used beyond 11 o'clock for ongoing activities.

Governor Forrest Smith on Tuesday appointed Horris D. Rodgers of Benton as a member of the Missouri State Highway Commission. Rodgers succeeds Paul Jones of Kennett who resigned to run for Congress in Southeast Missouri. Rodgers is son of Sikeston pioneers and longtime president of Scott County Abstract Company. He also chairs the Scott County Democratic Committee. Former Governor Donnelly had appointed J. Raymond Lucy to succeed Jones, but Lucy was never confirmed. Administration forces lost a filibuster compromise in the U S Senate after more than two weeks.

Three Children Die In Poplar Bluff Fire
Sheriff Burrent of Butler County said a full investigation would follow a deadly fire that killed Mrs Mary Burch's three children Shirley Ann 11 Violet 8 and Gary 3 and their dog. The children were found in a corn of the burned apartment after firefighters quieted the flames. The building was deemed unsafe and the family with another unit was told to move. The mother had recently been a patient in a mental hospital and welfare plans to consider removing the children from her custody were reported.

Baptists Plan Youth Camp Near Benton
The Charleston Baptist Association plans a summer camp for church youth and has optioned land at Unity Baptist Church on Highway 55 south of Benton. Rev. Paul Higgins of Sikeston, missionary for the association, will be camp director. If possible, the first session may be held this summer. Striking Wabash railroad employees, numbering about 3000, have spurned President Taiman's request to return to work. The strike started Tuesday and aims to change time claims and working rules.

Central College Band to Perform in Sikeston Friday
The Central College concert band of 40 under Prof. Keath K. Anderson will give a concert at the Sikeston High School Friday night March 18 at 8 p.m. The eight day tour runs March 13-20 with 20 concerts. Soloists include Keith House and Charleen Jones with a clarinet quartet and trumpet trio featured. The band remains in Sikeston overnight before continuing to Crystal City and St. Louis.

Nearly a thousand attended Risco last Friday as Ted Mangner of KMOX handed trophies to New Madrid County 4-H clubs for outstanding 1948 work. Eleven clubs and community leaders were honored, with Mangner urging continued effort to “make the best better.” The Charter Night program featured the Lilbourn high school band and a color technicolor film “4-H in Action.”

Clarence R. Jones, 77, died this morning at his son Harry Jones’ home from a heart attack. Born in Berkeley Kentucky, he moved here 26 years ago and farmed near Morley. Survived by five sons, two daughters, two sisters, and a brother. Body to lie in state at the Leech home 410 Ruth Street. funeral plans pending.

Mrs Cynthia Walker 66 died at 302 Heath Street from a complication of diseases. Born December 24 1882 in Hardin County Kentucky she lived 33 years in the community. Funeral at Church of the Nazarene with Rev Hoffert officiating burial Memorial Park cemetery. Survived by two sons Russell and Billy and daughter Maudie plus a sister and four grandchildren. Also noted former U S Senator Thomas P Gore died in Washington aged blind since childhood and one of Oklahoma’s first senators.
