Farmer Faces Murder Charges In Missouri Case
James M. Moody a 23 year old Point Pleasant farmer is jailed in New Madrid county charged with murder. A high school student Wm Hawkins Jr 18 died from a pistol wound and Betty Jean Peterson 16 is critically ill after a hitchhiking incident between Portageville and the Tiptonville ferry landing. Moody allegedly shot Hawkins after a hitchhiker rode in the rear of a pickup and demanded payment then set fire to the vehicle with Peterson present. Moody reportedly admitted the crimes, waived preliminary hearing, and will be tried at the May term in the New Madrid county circuit court. The victim planned to attend State College at Cape Girardeau. Funeral services for Hawkins were held in Portageville.

Diehlstadt Youth Found Guilty of Felonious Assault
Wm Lawder an 18 year old Diehlstadt youth was found guilty of felonious assault in Scott County circuit court last Friday and sentenced to three years in prison. Lawder was charged with seriously wounding Robert Garner 17 of Matthews during an altercation at Hicks Tavern near Sikeston last December 15. A motion for a new trial has been filed. Garner survived after months in Sikeston General Hospital and testified at the trial. The quarrel over who should dance with a young lady sparked the fight. Jury foreman H C Clark and members reported the verdict at 8 o clock Friday night. Also: Willie Wills charged with grand larceny received two years penitentiary on guilty plea and parole admission. Joe Klipfel jailed 90 days for DWI. Richardo Gonzales and Leon Ontizerez, previously sentenced to life for murder, moved for new trial with no action. A 36 year old un naturalized German man told Sikeston police he would fight for Hitler but not for the United States. He lacked a social security number and citizenship, claimed to have lived in the US since age six, and gave General Delivery as his address. He was jailed in Scott County and to be turned over to immigration authorities while the FBI investigates. The man, named Elmer Kuehne, has a prior Illinois prison record.
