Foreign Minister Jan G Massaryk of Czechoslovakia died by jumping from a window in the Prague foreign office building. The 61 year old son of the nation's first president reportedly acted in revulsion against Communist domination. The World This Week reports the dramatic event and its political context.
The Community Auction Sale postponed to Thursday March 25 due to adverse weather conditions. It was originally set for March 15. The event takes place in Kewanee.
Eight Southeast Missouri county Extension agents met for their March session to discuss planning remodeling and placement of farm homes and other buildings. The gathering started at the Christian church in Matthews after a stop at Clyde Scott’s farm home to review proposed farm building layouts. Counties represented included New Madrid Scott Mississippi Cape Girardeau Stoddard Pemiscot Dunklin and Butler with Herbert Rolf of New Madrid hosting.
The Sikeston Kiwanis club will host representatives from eight Southeast Missouri organizations next Thursday for a full day spring conference at the Dunn Hotel under Lt. Governor Owen J. Taul. C I. Moyer of Severance Kansas district governor will be the principal speaker at a banquet. over 250 Kiwanians and guests attend.
Leon M. Lane announces the Southeast Missouri Farm Service Co annual meeting will be held at Benton Monday at 1 30 p m. Four county board members will be elected for three year terms and interest on preferred stock will be paid. The Missouri State Farm Bureau Service Co manager will be principal speaker.
The Benton town board calls a meeting in the courthouse Friday at 8 pm to discuss the town waterworks situation. Local residents are urged to attend and share input on the municipal water system.
Dill Hildreth was elected commander of Amvet Post No. 15 at the regular Armory meeting. He succeeds Paul Trotter, who had led the post for two years. Officers elected included Trotter as adjutant, Charles Taylor provost marshal, Robert Demps ter judge advocate, Rev R M Talbert chaplain, C A Pinkstaff first vice president and Frank Ferrell second vice president. A brief session followed to discuss post building plans. Mrs Charles Taylor was installed president of the newly organized Auxiliary to the Amvets at the Armory with Mrs Paul Trotter vice president, Mrs W W Storey secretary, and Mrs Frank Ferrell treasurer. The auxiliary expects to receive their national charter soon.
Scott county circuit court hears the alienation of affections case of Mrs. Birtie Felker suing Lena Miller before Circuit Judge J V Dillings of Kennett. Attorneys Blanton and Blanton represent Felker. Marshall Craig and Robert Dempster represent Miller. Other cases include a divorce with alimony, guilty pleas for reckless driving and DWI, a punch board violation, and grand larceny sentencing.
In Chicago this week H M Zarkor manager of the Scott New Madrid Mississippi Electric Cooperative and Elon Proffer along with directors Alwin Gasser Haar Weeks R G Stroud and Roscoe Russell attended the National Board of Rural Electric Administration meeting. The meeting will close today.
About 25 Red Cross workers attended the Dunn Hotel dinner launching Scott county’s 1948 fund drive to meet a $7200 quota. Rev. Walter G. Craig of Chatfee spoke on Red Cross services including a new national blood bank. Miss Margaret Donnell reported 960 home service cases last year with $1425 spent, noting veteran aid will rise after the March 31 office closing. The disaster plan covers a seven county region with Sikeston as future relief HQ if the Mississippi flood hits.
Sikeston public schools announce B. Van Bibber will serve as superintendent for the remainder of 1948 and next year following T. E. B. Stallings resignation. Van Bibber has been acting superintendent since Nov 1 and joined Sikeston in 1944 as principal. Stallings began teaching in 1929 and became superintendent in 1944. Notice of election lists terms for John Sikes and L. M. Standbey, tax measures, and field use for softball.
Scott County Red Cross Drive Chairman W A Myers of Sikeston announced the complete roster of county solicitors and a revised listing of Sikeston workers. Co-Chairman W Allen Hubbard leads north end solicitors with names and districts, while Earl Jarvis heads the south end. Ward chairmen in Sikeston are listed with district leaders and business district officers.
Mr and Mrs E L Werner and their son from St Louis spent Wednesday with Dr J H Kready and Miss Kathryn Clark, en route to Florida for a visit.
Funeral services were held at the Taylor Funeral Chapel for Bertus Leonard Beck 65 a Salcedo farmer killed Tuesday in a tractor accident north of Tanner road. Coroner Orville Taylor ruled accidental death. Surviving are his widow Ida, three daughters, a son George Leonard Beck, two brothers and a sister.
A county wide meeting at the Dunn Hotel at 7 30 tomorrow will discuss organizing an Insect and Rodent Control committee for Scott County. County Agent Tom B Stroup says the program aims to identify distribution points for poison and start immediate action with help from local agencies and civic groups. Caldwell of the U S Fish and Wildlife Service will discuss conditions and needs for corrective measures and George Jones of the University of Missouri will assist. The program will cover economic and health impacts with moving pictures by Paul Decker and input from the Scott County Milling Co and Farm Bureau.
