Medal awards upheld by Gen George C Marshall
Gen George C Marshall Army chief of staff voiced concern that many fail to recognize the morale value of combat decorations. Since the war began about 12 000 combat decorations excluding the DFC and Air Medal have been awarded. He noted roughly 3000 decorations for distinguished or exceptionally meritorious service and about 135 000 air decorations have also been granted. He argued that prompt awards of ribbons and bronze have a strong moral effect and are not excessive.
