War Department announced a fleet of 18 hospital ships to be in service by month end with six more by year’s end. The 24 ships will carry over 14,000 patients including 3,300 walking wounded, under the Transportation Corps of the Army Service Forces.
On D day plus 9 fierce battles rage along the Allied front in Normandy. German counterattacks press hard as Brit ish Canadian units hold firm near Tilly Caen while Americans lose Montebourg on the Cherbourg peninsula but are said to retain positions around the town. In the central stretch of the beachhead the US forces repulse a German assault.
War Department reports American B 29 bombers attacked Japan this morning. Details are not provided. The raid marks two years since Jimmie Doolittle’s carrier raid on Tokyo.
Carentan and the Allies pushed south as German forces reportedly poured at least two fresh armored divisions, totaling four counterattacks along a 20 mile front from Troarn to Caen and Till Sur Somme Suelles. Allied HQ said the defense held firm with vigorous efforts to probe weak points.
Alvin Culwell 12 of Matthews was critically injured Tuesday morning when struck by Roy Frohock’s truck four miles south of Sikeston on Highway 61. Patrol ruled the boy stepped into the path. he suffered a fractured skull and was taken to Sikeston General Hospital. The truck was owned by W. A. Gemeinhardt of Matthews.
The Sikeston Public Library receives many book donations from local residents including L. M. Hollenbeck and Mrs. Flossie Maynard among others. Organizations such as Pre-School Mothers, American Legion, and Woman's Club contribute to an encyclopedia fund, while the Sikeston Baptist Church presents six volumes of Matthew Henry's Commentary.
Frank Mount a Sikeston civic and church leader died at Barnes Hospital St Louis shortly before 1 pm after months of illness He was 69 and proprietor of Sikeston Marble Works Survived by his widow daughter Lucille son Pvt Willard Mount and four other daughters ten grandchildren and several relatives The body will be returned to Sikeston with his family for services and burial.
Lieut Gen Brehon Somervell announced in Atlanta that about 1.5 million more men will be inducted into the Army and Navy. He said labor, not raw materials, is the bottleneck in industry and that prisoners of war are usable only in limited areas. He noted demand for POW labor exceeds supply by about 50 percent.
The Sikeston Public Library will start its summer Story Hour for children on Tuesday afternoon June 20. Acting librarian Mrs. Frank Miller announced. Mrs. J R Harwell will lead the first program. All city children are invited to attend, with sessions at four o'clock each Tuesday afternoon.

Clyde Worley Jr. of Morehouse died in an airplane crash in California. Reared and educated in Morehouse, he served with the Navy Air Corps at Klamath Falls, Oregon. Details unknown. The body will be sent home with military escort for funeral in Morehouse.

Funeral services for 21 year old Lillie Mae Ward, a former Sikeston resident, were held in St Louis after a Sunday night motorcycle collision near Cahokia that killed her. Ward lived with her father San Ward and left behind sisters Lucille Zennis Rachel Wessner Grace Duck and brother Frank Ward, plus grandmother Annie Thompson. Edward Gates of St Louis, driver of the car, stated another motorcycle forced him partially off the highway and he is being held for investigation.
Governor Forrest C Donnell of Missouri, Republican candidate for United States Senate, will address a Sikeston audience at 1 45 Tuesday afternoon after a lunch meeting. He plans to discuss campaign issues across Missouri ahead of the upcoming primary, a long political presence since 1908, with speeches in all 111 counties during his 1940 gubernatorial campaign.
Almost 150 Sikeston youths attended the opening of Sikes-Teen-Town at Sikeston High School gym. Miss Electa O'Hara, the temporary sponsor, announced schedules for youth groups age 12 to 19 with officers to be elected Wednesday night. Bert Moore has led as temporary president.
Sikeston's Fifth War Loan drive shows strong early results with city officials optimistic the $285,000 quota will be exceeded. About 200 volunteers conducted house to house solicitation under 20 captains, while towns in Scott County report early successes with Chaffee and Van Buren surpassing their targets.
Used car price ceilings will take effect July 10 at levels roughly equal to January 1944. Chester Bowles, CPA Administrator, announced at a news conference that ceilings will roll back current prices by about 10 percent. The rule covers private sales and dealer sales and aims to curb roughly 20 percent higher prices from a year and a half ago.
