The Sikeston Herald stops publication due to lack of support. Subscriptions prepaid will receive The Daily Sikeston Standard for the time paid. Subscribers who also receive the Daily Standard get an extension. The Herald Publishing Co. remains as a commercial and job printing firm.
The June city council meeting passed ordinances establishing new business license rates, rescinded the old dog license structure in favor of a flat $3 per dog per year, and set separate fees for self service laundries and auto and boat sales agencies. The council authorized actions on protests against the Frisco Railroad cutting passenger trains, ordered drainage work for northeast Sikeston, and planned traffic and street paving measures.
Four petty thefts were reported to the city police over the weekend. Joe Smith reported the propeller from an outboard motor was stolen. A money box from a Coca Cola machine at Kelley's Texaco on East Matone was broken and taken. Carron Boswell said hitchhikers at Standard Service Station on Highway 61 north caused a disturbance after a missed transistor raid and were believed to have stolen. A storage incident at Lindsay-Stewart Garage on Highway 61 north involved Coca-Cola cases and a vacuum cleaner.
Luther Murphy, born June 1 1931 in Mayfield Kentucky, has been bedridden by rheumatoid arthritis since 1947. He was among the first treated with Cortisone in Still's disease, underwent wrist surgery, and later moved to Sikeston to build a leather business and write music and stories. He hopes for a hip and knee replacement to regain mobility and continue his crafts.
Bill Oestriech of Memphis, driver for Radler Distributing, told city police at 3 30 a m that while his truck was parked at the North Wye an old brown Pontiac crew broke the seal and stole 20 cases of beer, about half bad. Deputy Shell Bad Davis investigated.
Prosecutors issued warrants for Amanda Draper a 57 year old black woman and James Warfield for arson in a May 29 blaze that destroyed Draper property and fatally burned Franklin Howard. Draper was arrested. Warfield hospitalized in critical condition with burns. Investigators traced an explosion and a gasoline fire after Franklin Howard and Warfield entered the house to rescue someone, and Draper allegedly planned the act for a share of insurance proceeds. Draper reportedly sought four thousand dollars for the building and two thousand five hundred for contents.
Sikeston Police reported two arrests yesterday on careless and reckless driving and being involved in accidents. Dorothy Johnson reported a rear collision at 405 West Malone. John Edwin Johnson, 36, of 235 Helen Street, was charged. Charles David Sprigs, 22, of 20 Moore Avenue, reported an accident involving Joan Anderson Lafont, 75, of 406 Kendall. Lafont faced a charge and received a summons for city court next Friday night.
A 31 year old Lilbourn man Simon Cherry was killed when struck by a hit and run driver on Route D two and a half miles east of Parma. Witnesses say another car driven by Gary Maddox Jr. ran over the body. The incident was among several weekend traffic accidents across Troop E. two other injuries involved Chaffee and Neelyville residents with charges of careless and reckless driving filed.
Raymond Kochel aged 69 and brother of Elmer Kochel of Sikeston died in the Veterans Hospital at Poplar Bluff last Wednesday. Born January 2 189? in Williamsport Indiana he was a bachelor and survived by four brothers James D Nochel Canaloa Elmer Kochel Sikeston 1st Kochel Williamsport Earl Kochel Marshfield Indiana and one sister Mrs Elsie Balser West Point Indiana. Funeral services were held at 2 pm Saturday at the Albritton funeral chapel with Rev C S Womack officiating. Burial followed in Garden of Memories Cemetery.
A Nashville style muttering over money led to a gunfight on Felker Street between Leon Smith and Elbert Shannon. Smith was hospitalized with a gunshot wound while Shannon faced felonious assault charges after being arrested by city officers. The Springfield Court of Appeals ordered a special election in Sineston for councilmen under a city manager form, with the Scott County circuit court to issue a supplementary writ mandating Mayor C. E. Felker to call the election within 60 days of the mandate. The mayor and attorney were unavailable for comment. The ruling comes amid a yearlong legal battle from the 1954 special election confirming the manager form and subsequent suits challenging that election.
Ilves t old Robert Don Midkiff, son of Mr and Mrs George Midkiff of Salcedo Road, jumped from a diving board at the Jaycee Swimming Pool and could not swim. Two boys pulled him from the water while lifeguard Joe Munger and Clyde Hollis revived him with five minutes of chest compressions. Munger, 20, recently completed Red Cross first aid training after graduating Sikeston High School in 1958 and is in his second year as a pool lifeguard. He plans to return to Murray State Teachers College in Murray, Kentucky, for his junior year.
Sikeston prepares its largest outdoor production Pioneer Days Re lived to celebrate the town 100th anniversary. A cast of 450 with a 100-voice choir rehearses for six nights starting Monday June 15 at Sikeston High School stadium. The spectacle includes pageant ceremonies nightly at 7:45 p.m. with a public crowning, bands, parades, and a grand living Wheel of Progress finale featuring 12 wheel spokes of local participants.
